Tokenized Deposits in Hong Kong: Standard Chartered's 24/7 Launch

Imagine moving company money between banks at midnight, on a Sunday, and having it move in real time. That is the idea behind a new launch from Standard Chartered.

In itsofficial press release, dated 2 November 2026, Standard Chartered announced tokenized deposits in Hong Kong for corporate clients.

It is the first market in the group to offer the solution. Here is a simple, source-based guide to what it is, how it works, and what is still unknown.

What Standard Chartered Announced

The lender said the product is aimed at corporate treasurers, banks, investment platforms, and digital asset businesses.

It uses the benefits of tokenization and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s (HKMA) EnsembleTX infrastructure to improve the efficiency of treasury, liquidity, and operational work.

In plain words, a tokenized deposit is a normal commercial bank deposit that exists as a digital token on a blockchain.

The release says the solution combines the trust of regulated bank deposits with the programmability of tokenized assets.

Eligible clients can use these deposits inside treasury and investment workflows, including intragroup liquidity management.

It also said it plans to expand the solution to more markets over time.

The release describes the goal as seamless, around-the-clock treasury and investment workflows for corporate clients.

These cover intragroup moves, meaning transfers between entities of the same company group, and cross-bank moves, meaning transfers between different banks.

Standard Chartered describes itself in the release as an international banking group present in 55 markets and listed on the London and Hong Kong stock exchanges.

How the Solution Works

The release explains that the product is built on the group’s own blockchain infrastructure.

It was developed with support from the HKMA’s Supervisory Incubator for Distributed Ledger Technology and is powered by EnsembleTX.

Three features stand out:

  • Deposits can be transferred in real time across participating banks

  • Inter-bank settlement happens in central bank money, including wholesale central bank digital currency (wCBDC)

  • Settlement runs on a 24/7 basis

The lender says this improves efficiency, interoperability, and settlement predictability while significantly reducing counterparty risk as value moves between financial institutions.

Counterparty risk simply means the chance that the other side of a payment fails to deliver.

A wholesale CBDC is digital central bank money used between financial firms, not by the general public.

Feature

What it means in simple terms

Real-time transfers

Money moves between participating banks without long waits

Central bank money settlement

Final payment uses money issued by the central bank

24/7 operation

No waiting for normal banking hours

Programmability

Payments can fit into automated digital workflows

Lower counterparty risk

Less chance that a payment partner fails to deliver

Early Users of Tokenized Deposits in Hong Kong

The release says the launch further strengthens the group’s digital asset offer and supports the growth of the tokenized asset ecosystem in the city. It also says the launch is already gaining traction.

China AMC, Finloop, and PantherTrade are executing live tokenized deposit transactions, along with settlement of tokenized money market funds powered by EnsembleTX.

A money market fund is a low-risk investment fund that holds short-term assets.

The lender is also partnering with Fireblocks to embed banking capabilities in the platform and give native access to the digital asset client ecosystem. HashKey has joined the ecosystem too, which widens the reach of the solution.

According to the release, these companies are exploring how the product can improve institutional treasury management and connectivity across investment and capital markets.

It adds that, as adoption grows, tokenized deposits are expected to unlock wider benefits for the real economy and drive more innovation across financial markets.

What the Executives Said

Mary Huen, CEO for Hong Kong, Greater China, and North Asia, welcomed the HKMA initiatives announced at Hong Kong FinTech Week under the DART framework.

She said the firm has been a major participant in EnsembleTX, contributing to its development and some of its earliest real-value transaction use cases.

She added that the launch underscores the city’s position as a leading digital asset hub.

Ole Matthiessen, Global Head of Transaction Services and Digital Assets, said the value of the product lies in helping clients move and manage liquidity more efficiently across institutions and markets.

He said it brings this new form of money into practical treasury and investment workflows, backed by the trust and controls of the banking system.

In his view, the firm is helping move tokenization from experimentation toward broader, scalable adoption.

What Is Not Yet Known

The press release is detailed, but it leaves several practical points open. For readers who follow tokenized deposits in Hong Kong, these gaps matter:

  • Pricing, fees and any minimum size for clients

  • The exact eligibility rules for corporate customers

  • Which markets will come next, and when

  • How many clients and how much value are using the system

  • Whether the release’s focus on corporate clients will later widen

Also, the release does not discuss deposit protection rules or interest on these tokens, so readers should not assume anything about them.

Anyone considering the product should ask Standard Chartered directly.

Conclusion

This launch shows how traditional banking and blockchain tools are starting to meet in daily treasury work.

Tokenized deposits in Hong Kong now offer corporate clients real-time transfers and round-the-clock settlement in central bank money, according to the lender.

Still, the next steps depend on adoption and on the expansion plans that were only outlined in general terms. Readers should follow the official channels for updates.
