Stellar Adds MoneyGram, Figure Markets and Range as Tier 1 Validators
CryptoCompass editorial visual for defi coverage.

In Brief:

  • Stellar added MoneyGram, Figure Markets, and Range as Tier 1 validators, expanding institutional participation across its core blockchain infrastructure network.
  • Tier 1 validators maintain strict uptime standards, operate geographically distributed nodes, publish network archives, and support Stellar consensus reliability requirements.
  • MoneyGram brings payments experience, Figure Markets adds regulated finance expertise, while Range contributes blockchain security capabilities across numerous global networks.

Stellar has added MoneyGram, Figure Markets, and Range as Tier 1 validators, expanding institutional participation across its core network infrastructure. According to a Stellar Development Foundation press release, the three firms will operate validators responsible for supporting network safety and reliability.

Their addition brings expertise spanning global payments, capital markets, and blockchain security into Stellar’s consensus layer. Moreover, it broadens the organizations responsible for maintaining the network.

Tier 1 validators play a central role within the Stellar Consensus Protocol. Each validator selects trusted participants through quorum sets before agreeing on ledger activity. Unlike some blockchain networks, Stellar does not offer block rewards or transaction fees to validators. Instead, organizations operate the infrastructure because network reliability supports their broader interests.

Significantly, Tier 1 organizations must meet strict operational requirements. Each organization must operate three full validators across geographically separated locations. They must also maintain sustained uptime of at least 99.9% and publish complete network history archives. Additionally, operators must complete SEP-1 and SEP-20 self-verification requirements.

MoneyGram, Figure and Range Deepen Roles Across Stellar

MoneyGram brings extensive payments experience to Stellar’s validator structure. Its relationship with the network already stretches back to 2021. Stellar previously supported MoneyGram Ramps, which connects digital assets with cash deposits and withdrawals. The blockchain also powers MoneyGram’s consumer balance feature.

Becoming a Tier 1 validator gives MoneyGram another operational role within the ecosystem. Consequently, its involvement now extends directly into infrastructure supporting Stellar’s consensus process. Figure Markets brings experience in capital markets and regulated financial products. The company also issues YLDS, a yield-bearing asset available on Stellar.

Figure views YLDS issuance and Tier 1 validation as important parts of its position within the Stellar ecosystem. Its validator role connects regulated asset activity with network infrastructure. Meanwhile, Range adds a security-focused operator to Stellar’s Tier 1 group. The company provides monitoring and compliance infrastructure across more than 200 blockchain networks.

Range also secures more than $30 billion in assets for customers. Therefore, its security expertise adds another operational perspective to Stellar’s consensus layer. Expanding the Tier 1 group also strengthens Stellar’s fault tolerance. More independent operators can reduce reliance on a smaller collection of infrastructure providers.

Additionally, greater geographic and industry diversity can strengthen network resilience when several operators experience disruptions. SDF expects the validators to become fully integrated into Stellar’s quorum configuration by mid-August.

Conclusion

MoneyGram, Figure Markets, and Range bring different financial and technical capabilities into Stellar’s highest validator tier. Their participation expands responsibility for securing the network beyond its existing Tier 1 operators.
