Stellar has unveiled “Protocol 30,” a notable update also known as the Bell upgrade, designed to enhance integration with leading fintech platforms and custodial service providers. This update introduces a new address format, improves transaction ledger timing to the millisecond level, and adds support for post-quantum cryptography standards.
Timeline and Transition Process
The rollout of stable infrastructure and SDK versions commenced between October 16 and October 23, 2026. The final validator vote, which is a critical step in the process, is scheduled for November 23. As an open-source blockchain network, Stellar is primarily focused on cross-border payments and asset issuance.
For individual XLM holders, no additional actions are required during this transition. The hard fork will proceed smoothly without necessitating any conversion or migration of assets to different networks. However, it is noted that these technical changes could directly impact the use case of XLM and the network’s economic structure.
Stellar assures that individual XLM holders need not perform any manual swaps or asset transfers, and the hard fork process will continue as usual.
Core Technical Modifications
The Bell update is centered around three key technical changes. The introduction of CAP 84 implements ‘W addresses’ to support multiplexing structures for smart contracts. This will allow banks and exchanges to manage millions of customer balances through a single contract, eliminating the necessity to create separate wallets for each user.
Another modification, CAP 88, will change the network clock precision from seconds to milliseconds, laying the groundwork for sub-second ledger closure times in the future. Additionally, CAP 87 will integrate the ML DSA post-quantum signature standard into Stellar Core, aimed at safeguarding Soroban smart contracts without incurring extra processing costs.
Providers who fail to update their SDK versions by November 23 will be unable to recognize new ledger blocks.
Mandatory Upgrade and Network Impact
The transition is not optional. Nodes, wallet providers, and exchanges must align with the new protocol in a timely manner. Those who do not update by November 23 will become incompatible with the network, unable to read new blocks.
This compulsory structure mitigates the risk of a network split. Stellar expects no unofficial forking scenarios or the emergence of alternative coins. The upgrade is seen as a clear framework for maintaining technical compatibility across the network.
Potential Impacts on XLM Use Cases
The simplification of the custody model through W addresses could reduce operational costs for fintech companies, potentially increasing commercial usage and transaction volume. This scenario might bolster natural demand for XLM, which is used to pay network fees.
Quantum resilience and faster transaction infrastructure are crucial for the tokenization of real-world assets. As Stellar strategically moves into this sector, the Bell update represents a key step towards enhancing the network’s capacity for institutional use.
