Stellar Hits a New Throughput Record

Stellar (@StellarOrg) has recorded a significant jump in raw processing capacity. According to blockchain analytics platform Chainspect, Stellar's theoretical maximum throughput now stands at 3,351 transactions per second (TPS). That figure represents a 65% increase over the network's previous benchmark, marking one of the more meaningful performance milestones the protocol has logged in recent memory.

Chainspect tracks Theoretical TPS as an estimate of a protocol's maximum capacity under ideal conditions, making it a useful indicator of headroom rather than a measure of day-to-day activity. Still, a higher ceiling matters for a network that positions itself as infrastructure for global payments.

Why Throughput Matters for Stellar

Stellar is a blockchain designed to facilitate low-cost, high-speed transactions across borders, and it is considered one of the faster networks for both cross-border payments and decentralised finance. The ability to process more transactions per second without a proportional rise in costs or settlement times is central to that pitch.

The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) has been explicit about its scaling ambitions. One of SDF's primary goals has been to increase Stellar Core's theoretical throughput to 5,000 transactions per second. As adoption of Soroban, the Stellar smart contracts platform, accelerates and new use cases emerge, scalability is essential to ensuring that Stellar remains fast, affordable, and developer-friendly.

The 3,351 TPS reading suggests the network is making steady progress toward that 5,000 TPS target. With Protocol 23 and other upgrades rolling out, Stellar has been described as on track to handle up to 5,000 transactions per second, which would put it on par with major card networks in terms of performance.

Higher throughput opens the door for new applications without compromising confirmation times or reliability, and makes Stellar more attractive to developers and better positioned to serve users who depend on fast, low-cost transactions.
