Strategy, the digital asset holding company led by Michael Saylor, announced an increase in its authorized buyback of preferred securities to $3 billion after recently spending $193.1 million on STRC share repurchases. This buyback amount is nearly nine times the $22.1 million that Strategy allocated to Bitcoin purchases in the same period.
Expanded Preferred Securities Program
The board of Strategy approved an additional $1 billion for its Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program, boosting the total authorization from $2 billion to $3 billion. This expanded program focuses exclusively on the company’s preferred securities, which include STRC, STRF, STRK, and STRD, and does not cover purchases of the ordinary MSTR common shares.
In the latest reporting period, Strategy bought back 1,938,780 STRC shares, valued at $193.1 million. The company did not report any repurchases of the other preferred series or its MSTR common stock. After accounting for these outlays and prior buybacks, Strategy has about $1.16 billion remaining for additional preferred securities repurchases under the newly increased $3 billion cap.
STRC is a variable-rate perpetual preferred equity designed to offer dividend income to investors. By buying back STRC shares, Strategy aims to reduce its future dividend payout obligations and help maintain STRC’s trading price near its $100 stated amount.
During periods when Bitcoin’s price declines, STRC can come under pressure, testing the sustainability of Strategy’s preferred financing model.
These factors have underscored the importance of managing the company’s capital structure, which continues to integrate both Bitcoin accumulation and preferred share repurchases.
Mini dictionary: STRC, STRF, STRK, STRD: These are different series of preferred securities issued by Strategy, each with unique terms or dividend structures. Preferred securities sit above common stock in a company’s capital structure and typically pay fixed or variable dividends.
Continued Bitcoin Accumulation
Alongside preferred share buybacks, Strategy recently acquired 267 BTC at an average price of approximately $82,900, bringing its total Bitcoin reserves to 848,517 BTC. Aggregate Bitcoin purchases have cost around $64.02 billion, or an average of $75,446 per coin.
This latest acquisition was partly financed by selling 140,872 MSTR common shares through the company’s at-the-market program, which raised $22 million, with an additional $100,000 coming from USD cash on hand. Last week, Strategy also purchased 250 BTC for $21.5 million, reflecting an average price of $86,194 per Bitcoin.

While Strategy continues acquiring Bitcoin, the growing use of MSTR share sales to fund these purchases means that Bitcoin exposure per share does not automatically rise, as the total share count increases.
By financing Bitcoin purchases with new equity, shareholders should note that overall Bitcoin holdings rise but individual share exposure may remain unchanged or even decrease.
Capital Management and Dollar Reserves
Strategy funded the entire $193.1 million STRC repurchase using its USD Cash balance, opting not to issue new preferred securities. As of October 18, the company’s USD Reserve stood at $4.83 billion, supplemented by $447.3 million in USD Cash, totaling approximately $5.28 billion in liquid assets.
The USD Reserve is primarily allocated to support dividend and debt payments for preferred securities. In contrast, the company relies on USD Cash for opportunistic Bitcoin acquisitions and buybacks. During the latest week, $45.5 million from the USD Reserve was paid as preferred dividends.
Strategy’s digital credit approach gives management the ability to balance Bitcoin holdings, maintain liquidity in dollars, and strategically adjust its preferred securities portfolio to match changing financial conditions.
Future purchases under the $3 billion authorization are not guaranteed, as actual spending will hinge on market circumstances and management assessment. For now, the filings reflect that despite continuing to acquire Bitcoin, Strategy is deploying significantly more cash toward preferred-share repurchases.
