Strategy Formalises Bitcoin Sales as a Capital Tool
Strategy, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, told investors on its second-quarter 2026 earnings call that it will continue to sell $BTC when doing so is in the company's interest. Management said the company will "sell Bitcoin when it's advantageous" and that investors should expect further sales on a go-forward basis. The update marks a notable shift from the approach that defined the company for years.
The Q2 call was the first earnings event since Strategy formally adopted Bitcoin sales as a capital management tool in June 2026, ending a four-year "never sell" doctrine that had underpinned the company's market premium. Proceeds from sales are earmarked to replenish USD reserves and cover shareholder obligations such as preferred dividend payments.
A key focus in Q2 was balancing the company's long-standing Bitcoin accumulation strategy with its capital management needs. Following years of uninterrupted accumulation, Strategy made limited Bitcoin sales for the first time, selling 3,620 BTC to help fund obligations and build cash reserves.
Future Capital Raises May Not Go Entirely to Bitcoin
Management also signalled a more flexible approach to deploying future capital. Rather than directing all funds raised toward Bitcoin purchases, the company indicated that proceeds could be split between $BTC and cash depending on market conditions at the time.
The company noted that maintaining a robust two-to-three-year USD reserve makes sense, with a minimum floor of one year. Its USD reserve stood at approximately $2.4 billion at the end of Q2 and subsequently increased to $3.75 billion.
Strategy recorded a $203 million realised loss on the sale of 3,588 Bitcoin in July, as well as a $1 million realised loss on the sale of 32 Bitcoin in May.Year-to-date, the company bought 174,895 Bitcoin and sold 3,620 Bitcoin, resulting in a 25% increase in total holdings since the start of 2026.
