TLDR

  • Stripe launched Stripe Pay, which offers free instant transfers between businesses using profile handles.
  • Both the sender and the recipient need qualifying Stripe financial accounts.
  • The tool works through the Stripe Dashboard and command line and includes a dry-run option.
  • Stripe is separately building AI agent wallets, virtual cards and stablecoin payment tools.
  • Stripe has not shared transaction volumes for the new service or said whether it settles on Tempo.

Stripe has launched a new way for businesses to send money to each other instantly and for free. The tool, called Stripe Pay, lets companies transfer funds using business profile handles instead of bank details.

The payments company announced the service on October 27. It is available through the Stripe Dashboard and the command-line interface.

How Stripe Pay Works

To use the service, the sender needs a funded financial account. The recipient must have a financial account linked to an existing Stripe profile.

Businesses can find a recipient by using a public handle, such as @recipient, or a unique profile network identifier. Companies that do not know the exact details can search Stripe’s business directory.

Stripe requires customers to verify the business before they authorize a payment. This step is meant to reduce the chance of sending money to the wrong account.

The plug-in supports sign-in through the Stripe command-line tool. Users must confirm their active account before moving funds, and businesses without a profile can create one during setup.

A dry-run option lets users check transfer details without moving money. Automated workflows must confirm the recipient, amount, currency and funding account before a real transfer goes through.

Stripe CEO Patrick Collison welcomed the launch in an October 27 post. He wrote that account-to-account payments would become more important than person-to-person transfers.

Stripe Expands AI Agent and Stablecoin Tools

Stripe Pay’s command-line support sits next to the company’s separate work on payment tools for AI agents. The announcement does not say the new plug-in settles transfers using stablecoins.

At its 2026 Sessions conference, Stripe introduced financial accounts that software agents can use to check balances, pay invoices, issue cards and manage cash. The plans include human approval for important transactions.

The company also offers Link’s wallet for agents, which provides single-use virtual cards or shared payment tokens. Through Privy, developers can create programmable wallets that hold digital assets.

In February, Stripe introduced USDC payments through Coinbase’s x402 protocol. The system lets AI software pay for digital services without a standard checkout.

Stripe built its stablecoin business through its purchases of Bridge and Privy. In April, it announced stablecoin-backed cards and tools for issuing custom stablecoins.

In October, Bridge became the issuer of OUSD on the Open USD stablecoin network. Separately, Tempo, the blockchain Stripe developed with Paradigm, launched its mainnet in March.

Stripe’s 2025 annual letter estimated that stablecoin payment volume reached about $400 billion in 2025. Business-to-business transfers made up around 60% of that activity across the market.

Banks are also building their own systems. In July, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo were reported to be developing a shared deposit-token network.

Stripe has not shared transaction volumes for the new transfer service. It also has not said whether its instant B2B payments settle on the Tempo blockchain.
