@SuiNetwork has joined forces with OpenAssets to advance the Open Tokenized Asset Standard (OTAS), an open-source framework for institutional tokenization, under the governance of @lfdecentralized, the Linux Foundation's blockchain and decentralized technology arm.
What OTAS Does
Governed as an LFDT lab, OTAS establishes a neutral, open-source framework for representing, verifying, and settling tokenized assets across financial systems. It is designed as a neutral, auditable foundation for identity, compliance, asset representation, and reporting, one that institutions can build on rather than adopt wholesale.
The collaboration focuses on making tokenized financial assets interoperable, meaning they can be moved and verified across different networks without the need for expensive, custom-built software for every single chain. The practical goal is to let tokenized securities, funds, and commodities move between institutions without bespoke integration work at every step.
OTAS allows institutions to retain their preferred tech stacks while seamlessly trading, verifying, and moving assets across networks. That flexibility is central to the standard's pitch: participants do not need to abandon existing infrastructure to benefit from shared rules.
Sui's Role and the Linux Foundation Connection
Proposed by OpenAssets with Sui Foundation and Mysten Labs as an initial sponsor, OTAS aims to provide the industry with a neutral, auditable onchain foundation that institutions can build upon or integrate with production platforms.OTAS is an open standards lab hosted at LF Decentralized Trust, initiated by OpenAssets and sponsored by Sui Foundation, which joined LFDT in September 2026. The lab was formally added to LFDT in Spring 2026 and includes open-source smart contract reference implementations for tokenized financial instruments.
Neutral, shared standards have repeatedly helped emerging technology markets scale. The Linux Foundation has spent more than two decades helping build trusted, vendor-neutral governance for technologies including Linux, Kubernetes, and PyTorch. OpenAssets, a Premier Member of LF Decentralized Trust, proposed OTAS to bring that same model of open governance to tokenized capital markets.
Across financial institutions, tokenized assets are already being issued, managed, and settled in production environments. But as adoption accelerates, one gap becomes clear: there is still no common language between systems. OTAS is positioned as that common language, with $SUI and its underlying Move architecture serving as a reference implementation for the standard going forward.
