Boon had been serving as president. The Defiant reported that he succeeds Evan Cheng as CEO, while Cheng stays on as chief technology officer.
Planned succession at Mysten Labs
Cheng said the handover had been in his plans for some time. "I planned for this day when I made him President," Cheng wrote on X, according to a report syndicated from The Defiant. In an Oct. 16 letter, he said Boon had accepted the job. Cheng added that he has "the utmost faith" in Boon as his successor.
Boon previously served as chief legal officer before being promoted to president, per the same report. Cheng described him as instrumental in leading Mysten Labs, and Boon has spent four years at the company.
Cheng framed the move as a way to free up time for technical leadership while continuing to support the Sui and Walrus ecosystem. In the letter he wrote that it "makes my scope more manageable."
New AI unit to be built on Sui and Walrus
The leadership change comes alongside a new internal AI business unit, which Cheng will lead personally. According to ChainCatcher, the unit will have its own engineering and product development functions to reduce external dependencies. It will focus on agent-trust products and AI-native infrastructure, following the model of Mysten's onchain finance unit launched this summer.
The stated aim is to let AI agents carry out tasks autonomously within limits set by their users. Products and services are to be anchored to Sui and Walrus, Mysten's decentralized storage protocol, which launched on mainnet in March 2025, The Defiant reported.
Cheng pointed to risks as agents take on tasks such as trading and payments. TokenPost quoted him as saying AI agents are starting to make decisions with financial and legal consequences, and that systems are needed to ensure they cannot exceed their authority.
Mysten Labs has also announced a collaboration with Google Cloud on a Verifiable Agent Arbiter, an evidence layer intended to show that enterprise AI agents act within authorized boundaries, according to ChainCatcher.
The announcement has no direct bearing on the Sui protocol itself, and one market commentary noted that a leadership change alone offers little basis for a trading thesis. Readers tracking $SUI may want to watch on-chain activity and liquidity instead.
