Sui Network's programmable offchain tunnels peaked at 40,614,180 transactions per second during a live stress test on October 7 at Sui Basecamp in Singapore, more than doubling the 20 million TPS target set for the event and surpassing the roughly 6.1 million TPS recorded in a comparable test in July.
How the Test Was Run
The demonstration took place on the Summit Stage at Marina Bay Sands, where Sui Basecamp was held alongside Token2049 Singapore. According to Sui's official blog, the test was led by Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Mysten Labs, and verified in real time by independent auditor CertiK, whose full report is still pending. More than 10,000 tunnels were opened on Sui mainnet during the demonstration, with activity spanning payments, games, and chat applications.
The tunnels are programmable offchain state and payment channels. They process transactions outside the main chain and only settle to Sui mainnet when a channel is closed. Each closed tunnel is mutually cosigned by participants and remains independently verifiable onchain, preserving a cryptographic record without burdening the base layer with every individual operation. The architecture draws a structural comparison to Bitcoin's Lightning Network, which uses a similar open-and-close model for offchain payment channels.
Why AI Agents Are the Target Market
Sui has been explicit about the intended use case. The tunnels are optimised for high-frequency communication between AI agents, where the volume and speed of interactions far exceed what human-driven activity would ever require. As Abiodun put it at the event, no human market needs 40 million transactions per second, but autonomous agents transacting continuously in commerce, gaming, and messaging do.
The October result is more than six times the July figure, and Sui frames the progression as a deliberate build toward infrastructure capable of supporting machine-scale commerce. CertiK's audit report, expected in the coming days, will provide independent verification of the execution logs and cryptographic proofs behind the peak number.
