Key takeaways

  • Super Micro raises quarterly revenue guidance by $4 billion
  • SMCI stock surges nearly 12% on stronger AI demand
  • Higher margin expectations support Dell and HPE stock gains

Super Micro Computer (SMCI) stock surged approximately 12% on Wednesday, October 21, after the AI server manufacturer dramatically raised its quarterly revenue and profit-margin forecasts, providing fresh evidence that demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure remains strong.

Shares climbed to approximately $36.25 in intraday trading after the company increased its estimated fiscal first-quarter revenue by $4 billion at the midpoint. The announcement also lifted shares of competing server manufacturers Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

According to Super Micro's official update, revenue for the quarter ended September 30 is now expected to reach $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, compared with its previous forecast of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion.

Super Micro's $19.5 Billion Forecast Surprises Wall Street

The revised guidance represents a 26.7% increase at the midpoint, lifting expected quarterly revenue from $15 billion to $19 billion.

More importantly, Super Micro raised its projected gross margin to 12%-12.5%, compared with an earlier estimate of 10.4%-10.8%. Management attributed the improvement to stronger AI platform demand and a more favorable mix of customers and products.

The margin improvement is particularly important because Super Micro has previously struggled to convert explosive AI server orders into consistently stronger profitability.

Its earlier updates revealed more than $60 billion in new orders, but investors remained concerned about component costs, working capital requirements and competition.

The latest preliminary figures suggest that higher sales volumes may now be accompanied by improving profitability rather than simply greater hardware shipments.

Dell and HPE Rally as AI Server Demand Strengthens

The announcement also boosted sentiment toward other AI infrastructure suppliers. Dell and HPE advanced after investors interpreted Super Micro's results as evidence of sustained enterprise and hyperscaler spending.

That reaction contrasts with recent concerns surrounding Dell's AI business, after Barclays warned that rising memory prices could be inflating reported hardware revenue.

Dell previously disclosed a $95 billion backlog, demonstrating substantial demand but also raising questions about how efficiently orders can become revenue.

Super Micro's stronger margin forecast is therefore significant because it suggests improvements beyond revenue growth alone.

Nevertheless, rising AI server prices remain a potential challenge for customers expanding computing capacity.

What Comes Next for SMCI Stock?

The rally arrives amid broader questions about how much additional AI infrastructure spending technology companies can sustain.

Super Micro's update provides a positive signal, but its financial figures remain preliminary and unaudited. The company will release full quarterly results on November 3, when investors can evaluate actual revenue, earnings and cash flow.

The stronger outlook has already contributed to a broader technology stock rebound, alongside renewed enthusiasm for AI computing.
