Tencent Holdings has initiated a controlled rollout of Xiaowei, an artificial intelligence-powered assistant integrated within WeChat, the ubiquitous super application serving more than 1.4 billion users across China. The Xiaowei assistant accepts instructions through both written text and spoken commands. Users can leverage it to dispatch messages, initiate phone calls, and explore the vast array of mini-programs embedded within WeChat’s digital ecosystem — encompassing services from meal delivery and transportation booking to financial transactions and e-commerce.
According to an official communication from Tencent’s customer support division, the assistant operates predominantly on WeLM, the company’s proprietary large language model. For certain inquiries, processing duties are delegated to DeepSeek.
Within China’s borders, WeChat operates under the name Weixin and functions as an indispensable component of everyday existence for countless users. This extensive user base positions it as an exceptionally valuable distribution channel for artificial intelligence capabilities — provided Tencent executes the integration successfully.

WeChat has not yet disclosed the comprehensive catalog of functions Xiaowei can perform during this experimental phase. The trial program maintains restricted access, and company representatives have not provided any projected schedule for expanding availability.
Tencent’s customer support team independently verified the technical implementation involving WeLM and DeepSeek, separate from WeChat’s primary product announcement, offering additional transparency regarding what remains an early-development offering.
