Tesla has changed the name “Full Self-Driving” to “Tesla Assisted Driving” on its European websites.

The pages for Slovakia, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands now redirect to the new name, but the US site still sells “Full Self-Driving (Supervised).”

Germany caps the system at 10% over the speed limit

In a statement released on October 6, the German Federal Ministry of Transport said that the name “FSD” was not accurate. The ministry says that the system doesn’t take over driving completely. Instead, it helps the driver with speeding up, slowing down, and steering while they stay alert.

Tesla and Transport Minister Steffen Bilger talked in September, and Tesla came up with the idea for the new name. During the same talk, the speed cap was also set.

The ministry said that the system could be a little over the limit that was posted, but not by more than 10%. Germany made it clear that it would support that approach in the EU process.

The version that is legal in the Netherlands lets drivers go up to 50% over the limit that was detected. To meet the German cap, Tesla needs to slow the system down.

The ministry says that the driver is still fully in charge of steering the car. The ministry also said that the system has worked well so far, especially in city traffic.

The approval is being worked on by Germany, the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the Dutch Type-Approval Authority, and Tesla. Individual system functions and liability were looked at in great detail.

Bilger said that his goal is for Tesla drivers all over the EU to be able to use Assisted Driving as soon as possible. Musk told Germany “Danke schoen” on X.

Musk has described the self-driving technology as key to Tesla’s future growth.

Eight EU states already allow the system and Slovakia is next

It is already legal in the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Croatia. Slovakia expects to be the ninth in a few days, but Germany is not yet on the list.

The EU vote was pushed back, from October to at least December, as France ran more tests. For bloc-wide approval, 15 of the 27 EU member states, representing 65% of the EU’s population, must agree.

The Swedish Transport Agency was asked by Swedish consumer protection authorities to look into whether the FSD ads meant fully autonomous driving, and officials in Italy said they thought it might mean SAE Level 3 automation.

California did something extra. According to Cryptopolitan, in December 2025, an administrative law judge said that Tesla was deceptive in how it advertised Autopilot and FSD. The state DMV gave Tesla 90 days to change the language or lose its license to sell cars in the state for 30 days.

Customers in the US can get “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” for $99 a month. According to Cryptopolitan, the one-time $8,000 fee was replaced by a subscription on February 14. This came after Tesla stopped putting Autopilot in new cars in the US and Canada in January.

Musk has said that the monthly fee will go up as FSD gets better.
