Key Highlights

  • The redesigned Tesla Roadster could make its debut in August 2026, marking nearly ten years since the next-generation model was initially announced.
  • The unveiling is anticipated to occur at SpaceX’s McGregor, Texas testing facility.
  • A special edition variant will incorporate cold-gas rocket thrusters created in partnership with SpaceX, with potential hovering capabilities.
  • The thruster-equipped variant will likely not meet street-legal requirements and may carry a price tag reaching into the millions.
  • Back in 2017, Tesla collected $50,000 reservations for the base model and $250,000 for the exclusive Founder’s Series.

According to a report from The Information, Tesla is gearing up to showcase its redesigned Roadster as soon as this month. The presentation is slated to happen at SpaceX’s testing grounds in McGregor, Texas.

When the next-generation Roadster made its initial appearance in 2017, Tesla promised deliveries would begin in 2020. That schedule has been pushed back multiple times, leaving reservation holders waiting for approximately nine years.

Externally, the conventional Roadster and the special SpaceX edition are anticipated to share a similar appearance. Performance specifications on Tesla’s site continue to promise acceleration from 0-60 mph in under two seconds, maximum velocity exceeding 250 mph, and an estimated range of 620 miles.

Development of the Roadster took a new direction when Tesla abandoned its initial plan built around Model S Plaid technology. The project has transformed into a purpose-built carbon-fiber hypercar designed entirely from scratch.

SpaceX Thruster Technology

The most attention-grabbing element is a cold-gas thruster arrangement created through cooperation with SpaceX. Approximately 10 high-pressure thrusters are positioned throughout the vehicle’s structure, engineered to enhance acceleration dynamics, cornering grip, and stopping power.

Speculation suggests the system might enable the vehicle to momentarily lift off the surface. This capability remains unverified at this time.

Due to the sound levels and thrust forces produced by the system, the car may require remote control operation during its unveiling. The thruster-outfitted model is unlikely to receive approval for public road use.

The SpaceX package variant could command a price exceeding hundreds of thousands of dollars, possibly reaching millions. This represents a substantial increase over the original reservation pricing structure Tesla established years earlier.

Reservation Background

Tesla initially collected $50,000 reservation fees for the base Roadster configuration and $250,000 for the limited Founder’s Series variant. These deposits have remained active since 2017.

The fate of current reservations and the pricing framework for newly announced variants remains unclear at this time.

Reuters reported on August 14, 2026, that Tesla had not provided comment in response to their inquiry about the upcoming event.

While the demonstration is anticipated at SpaceX’s McGregor location, Tesla has not officially announced a specific date for the unveiling.
