@Tether has quietly become one of the most profitable financial enterprises on the planet, and the numbers are hard to ignore. The issuer of the world's largest stablecoin has generated $19.93 billion in lifetime revenue from yield on the assets backing its $184 billion $USDT stablecoin, a figure that puts it in rare company across both crypto and traditional finance.

A Revenue Machine Built on Reserves

Tether's business model is straightforward but extraordinarily lucrative. Rather than charging transaction fees, it earns yield by investing the dollars deposited to mint $USDT into short-term assets, primarily U.S. Treasuries. Tether's revenue is driven chiefly by interest on reserves, with roughly $127 billion in Treasuries and similar short-term securities generating gross interest income on the order of $5 to $6 billion per year.

Tether's profits for 2024 surpassed $13 billion, according to a fourth-quarter and year-end attestation reviewed by independent accounting firm BDO.That performance was more than double the $6.2 billion it recorded in 2023.Looking ahead, Tether expects net profits near $15 billion in 2025.

Tether does not issue audited financial statements, a practice that has drawn criticism from regulators and crypto sector observers. Rather, the company files quarterly information as part of a third-party attestation by accounting firm BDO.

How Circle Compares

@Circle's $USDC has generated $7.57 billion in lifetime revenue, a figure that is impressive in its own right but illustrates how large the gap between the two issuers has grown. The structural reasons are clear: $USDT's supply is more than double that of $USDC, giving Tether a significant head start on reserve income.

In 2024, Circle reported $1.68 billion in revenue and reserve income, with net income reaching $156 million. Circle also faces a cost structure that limits how much of that revenue it retains. In 2024, Coinbase received $908 million of Circle's $1.01 billion in total distribution costs, roughly 54 cents in every dollar of revenue.

Circle posted $2.747 billion in total revenue and reserve income for 2025, up 64% from a year earlier, as USDC circulation reached $75.3 billion at year-end. Growth is accelerating, but the scale difference with Tether remains stark. That scale alone gives Tether a massive profitability edge. In 2024, it reported nearly $13 billion in gross profit.

The stablecoin sector is maturing fast, and the revenue figures from both @Tether and @Circle underline just how much value flows through dollar-pegged tokens. For now, $USDT's commanding market lead means its earnings power is in a league of its own.
