Tether USDT is facing fresh scrutiny after a Senate Democratic report examined its use in Iran-linked cryptocurrency transactions. The report analyzed 846 crypto wallets sanctioned or blocked by the United States and Israel. It found that 84% had transacted in USDT, citing its role in moving funds across borders and supporting Iran’s financial networks.
Tether USDT Featured Heavily in Iran Linked Wallets
The investigation was led by Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut. His Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations examined blockchain activity involving wallets connected to Iran.

The report said USDT appeared frequently among wallets linked to alleged sanctions evasion and terrorism financing. Investigators attributed the token’s use partly to its liquidity and availability across Iranian cryptocurrency exchanges.
Blumenthal called for the Treasury and Justice departments to examine potential sanctions and banking law violations. The Senate committee’s published materials list the September 28 investigation as “Crypto and Iran’s Shadow Banking Network.”
The report also raised questions about Tether’s compliance practices. Investigators said some wallets showed indicators of illicit activity despite information linking them to Iranian entities.

Tether said it helped freeze nearly $550 million in Iran-linked USDT during 2026. The company argued that public blockchains allow authorities to trace transactions and enable Tether to act when credible information reaches the company.
The report arrives as Washington continues expanding sanctions targeting Iran’s financial activity. Reuters reported that the Treasury Department’s August Operation Economic Outcast included attention to cryptocurrency transactions.
The Senate investigation places Tether USDT under renewed scrutiny while the company maintains that its compliance efforts have helped authorities restrict Iran-linked funds.
