@ButtCoin is up 127% this week, trading at $0.026 with a $26 million market cap, more than doubling while major tokens move sideways.
From Forum Joke to On-Chain Token
The Buttcoin name dates to 2011, when it spread across early crypto forums and eventually took root on Something Awful, where critics mocked Bitcoin's libertarian ideals. It then migrated to Reddit, where the r/Buttcoin community spent years cataloguing exchange collapses and blockchain failures. The term predates Dogecoin by years and became crypto skepticism's defining shorthand. The token's "The Next Bitcoin" branding nods to a 2013 YouTube video by James D. McMurray, which satirised Bitcoin's complexity and gave the modern token its visual identity, including a logo that rotates the Bitcoin symbol 90 degrees to resemble a butt.
The Solana token launched anonymously on Pump.fun on January 30, 2025, with the original developer selling their tokens just seconds after launch. It was later endorsed by the meme's original creator as the only token carrying his approval. On its launch day, the token recorded a sharp single-day spike, with its market cap briefly reaching levels well above the current $26 million figure before settling back.
The Irony That Became the Trade
Buttcoin carries no stated technical utility. Its value is driven entirely by community participation and a satirical narrative rooted in more than a decade of crypto skepticism. The r/Buttcoin subreddit, which coined the phrase "number go up technology" as a punchline, has been cataloguing crypto disasters since 2011 and today counts nearly 200,000 members. The token reclaims that culture, transforming the joke into a tradeable on-chain asset.
In price terms, $BTC and other majors have not moved much this week. Buttcoin has not beaten them in dollar value, but on a percentage basis it has left them behind. After 15 years of mocking number-go-up, Buttcoin is the number going up.
