The U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, signaling that the labor market has yet to stabilize after four months of positive growth. The unemployment rate, however, fell slightly to 4.1 percent.
Following weak employment data, Nick Timiraos, a Wall Street Journal reporter known for his close ties to Fed policy, stated that interpreting the July employment report would not be easy for the Fed.
According to Timiraos, new evidence that the labor market has not accelerated again could reduce the urgency for the Fed to raise interest rates next month. However, the most important variable in terms of the direction of the interest rate decision will be inflation data.
Timiraos stated that the market’s focus will remain on inflation as the unemployment rate continues to decline, adding that increases and decreases in price pressures could determine the Federal Reserve’s approach to interest rate policy.
Accordingly, moderate inflation data could strengthen the argument for the Fed to leave interest rates unchanged. In particular, two consecutive months of moderate inflation data could be interpreted as an indication that the slowdown in price pressures is becoming a distinct trend rather than a temporary fluctuation.
Conversely, strong inflation data could lead the Fed to reconsider its current inflation forecasts and strengthen the likelihood of an interest rate hike.
Timiraos indicated that if inflation turns out to be high, predictions that inflation targets can be achieved without changing interest rates may be questioned by more Fed officials. He noted that in such a scenario, the support of officials advocating for interest rate increases in the decision-making process could also increase.
