XRP Ledger Emerges as the Go-To Rail for AI Agent Payments
The $XRP Ledger has recorded more than 8 million transactions through the x402 payment protocol in the past 30 days, reinforcing its position as a primary settlement layer for autonomous artificial intelligence agents operating in digital commerce.
The ledger passed 10 million cumulative x402 payments at the start of October 2026, a milestone that arrived less than three months after it crossed the 1 million mark, according to TokenPost. AI agents paying for computing and data make up most of the activity.
Services using the protocol also include financial data, risk, credit, and other application programming interfaces. Transactions are settled autonomously in either XRP or RLUSD, Ripple's onchain US dollar-backed asset.
What x402 Does and Why It Matters
The x402 protocol is an HTTP-native micropayment standard in which a server responds to a client request with a 402 Payment Required status, a machine-readable payment specification, and a resource price denominated in stablecoins. In practice, this means a seconds-long paid API exchange, without API keys, account setup, or human intervention.
The Linux Foundation operationally launched the x402 Foundation on July 14, 2026, uniting Visa, Mastercard, Coinbase, Stripe, and 13 other premier members around one open standard for AI agents to pay for goods and services over HTTP.
The XRP Ledger's technical profile suits this use case well. Transactions finalize in three to five seconds on the XRP Ledger, fees run a fraction of a cent, and there is no gas auction to wait out. For a machine paying another machine a few hundredths of a cent for an API call, waiting even thirty seconds for finality defeats the purpose.
Ripple has moved deliberately to capture this market. In June 2026, Ripple launched the XRPL AI Starter Kit, a collection of developer tools that introduced new ways for AI agents to make payments using the x402 protocol, allowing seamless, trust-minimized transfers in XRP and RLUSD for APIs and digital services.
RippleX's Head of Engineering, Ayo Akinyele, anticipates that this volume could reach between 10 and 100 million in the coming years. With the 30-day figure already sitting above 8 million, that ceiling may arrive sooner than expected.
