  • Labour lawmakers proposed a permanent ban on cryptocurrency political donations to strengthen election finance transparency and reduce anonymous funding risks in Britain.
  • Nigel Farage remains under scrutiny over crypto-linked financial matters, including a £5 million gift and controversial political associations investigated recently.
  • Parliament will debate the proposed amendments next week, with the outcome potentially reshaping how political parties receive campaign funding.

Labour lawmakers have introduced plans to permanently ban cryptocurrency donations to political parties and election candidates across the United Kingdom. The proposal seeks to strengthen election finance rules by preventing digital assets from being used in political fundraising.

Liam Byrne is leading the effort through amendments to the Representation of the People Bill, which governs voting and political finance regulations. The proposed changes would make it illegal for parties and candidates to accept donations in crypto assets. Moreover, the amendments had attracted at least 20 parliamentary signatures by Thursday afternoon.

Byrne said the proposal is intended to reduce the risks posed by anonymous and impermissible donations. He also urged lawmakers to support the amendments, arguing that stronger safeguards are necessary to protect the integrity of UK democracy. Parliament is expected to debate the bill during its report stage next Tuesday.

Supporters of the proposal believe cryptocurrencies present additional challenges for verifying the source of political donations. Consequently, they argue that a permanent ban would improve transparency and reduce opportunities for undisclosed funding.

Farage Investigation Fuels Debate Over Crypto Funding

The proposed legislation arrives as Reform UK leader Nigel Farage faces continued parliamentary scrutiny over crypto-linked financial matters. Lawmakers have questioned donations and financial relationships connected to the veteran politician, placing cryptocurrency funding under greater political examination.

According to reports, Farage received a £5 million, or approximately $6.7 million, gift from Thailand-based British cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne in early 2024. Bankers involved in processing the transaction reportedly raised concerns about the source of the funds and submitted a Suspicious Activity Report to the National Crime Agency.

Additionally, Farage’s association with George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster linked to the offshore crypto gambling platform Tether.bet, has attracted further attention. Labour lawmakers argue that such cases demonstrate why existing political finance rules require stronger protections against opaque funding.

However, Farage has firmly rejected allegations of wrongdoing. He said the £5 million was a private gift rather than a political donation and emphasized that he received it before becoming a Member of Parliament. Farage also insisted that he had not broken any laws or misused public money. His remarks came as calls for tighter oversight of cryptocurrency donations continued to grow across Parliament.

Parliament Set to Decide Future of Crypto Donations

The proposed amendments have placed cryptocurrency political donations at the center of the UK’s broader election finance debate. Supporters believe banning digital asset contributions would close potential loopholes that traditional financial regulations may not fully address. Meanwhile, opponents are expected to question whether a complete prohibition is necessary or whether stricter disclosure requirements could achieve the same objective.

Parliament’s decision on the proposed amendments could determine the future of cryptocurrency donations in UK politics. If approved, the legislation would permanently prohibit political parties and candidates from accepting crypto contributions, marking a significant change to Britain’s campaign finance rules.
