In France’s peaceful Somme region, a couple faced three terrifying home invasions due to criminals mistakenly pursuing a substantial crypto fortune they do not own. The present homeowners were unwittingly caught in a storm created by data leaks pertaining to the previous residents, who were involved with cryptocurrency investments.
The attacks were precipitated by exposed personal information that belonged to the former owners, wealthy retirees engaged in cryptocurrency trading. Their tax and address information, leaked and sold on the dark web, marked the property as belonging to affluent crypto holders. Despite changes in ownership, this stale data remained unaltered, making the couple unintended targets.
The initial intrusion attempt was thwarted by the couple’s dogs, scaring off the invaders. Subsequently, a second group breached the property, restraining one resident and broadcasting their actions live on Snapchat before realizing their costly error. After narrowly averting a third breach on July 17 through a newly installed security alarm, the couple found some solace.
What judicial steps were taken?
Following the third incident, French law enforcement swiftly intervened, apprehending two young men involved in the failed invasion. These men, aged 20 and 21, were brought to justice with one recruited via Telegram for the crime. The courts sentenced them to significant prison terms of three and eighteen months, respectively.
CertiK highlighted, “Criminals are increasingly exploiting leaked databases to combine names, addresses, tax documents, exchange details and blockchain activity, assembling comprehensive profiles of presumed crypto holders.”
CertiK, a leading blockchain security company, labels these incidents as “data-driven targeting.” Such crimes emerge when attackers amalgamate various hacked or leaked data sources to target individuals wrongly believed to control vast crypto assets. The firm warns that outdated information can inflict dangers long after changes in circumstances.
- Data leaks have concrete and adverse outcomes, leading directly to physical crime.
- Judicial systems in France are actively tackling these unique crimes with quick arrests and sentencing.
- The expanding trend of physical crypto-related crimes is particularly pronounced in France.
The victims, completely uninvolved with cryptocurrency, are now seeking to move. Their ongoing ordeal remains a stark reminder of the persistent risks fresh data leaks pose, underscoring the necessity for advanced data protection measures worldwide.
