The US became a net importer of Bitcoin ($BTC) in 2026 for the first time since 2022, according to blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis. The finding appears in a Wednesday report titled "North America: Inside the Growth of Agentic Commerce."

Institutions buy while retail sells

According to the data, institutions have been buying bitcoin this year while retail largely sells. Chainalysis also said the US share of global Bitcoin activity has risen in every reporting period since spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in January 2024. Large Bitcoin transfers drove net US inflows, while transfers below $10,000 remained net outbound.

The shift has come during a weaker market. The overall US crypto economy contracted 2.2% to $2.78 trillion during a bear market, according to the report.Even so, it retained most of the gains from 2025, when the economy nearly doubled.

On the spot ETF effect, the US Securities and Exchange Commission approved Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in January 2024 after a decade of denying the products. Chainalysis said the approval helped the industry mature and made the US a larger Bitcoin investor overall.

Dollar stablecoins find demand overseas

While the US accumulates Bitcoin, dollar-backed stablecoins continue to grow in international payments and cross-border transactions. The report said new stablecoin use cases continued to emerge overseas in 2026, generating billions of dollars in economic activity for US businesses and government.

Chainalysis framed the split in terms of banking access. "A dollar stablecoin is a way to hold dollars without an American bank account, and Americans already have one," the report said. The report characterized American Bitcoin use as increasingly tied to demand for a scarce store of value.

Separate Chainalysis data points to broad growth in stablecoin payments. Cross-border stablecoin value rose 77.5% to $220.3 billion in the year ending June 30, 2026, on payments averaging $3,000.Chainalysis credits emerging regulatory frameworks, including the GENIUS Act in the US, with driving stablecoin adoption.

The findings suggest a division of roles: US investors, led by institutions, are building Bitcoin positions through regulated products, while the rest of the world relies more on dollar-pegged tokens for savings and payments.
