The U.S. national debt has crossed $40 trillion for the first time, adding pressure to a fiscal outlook already affecting Treasury yields, borrowing costs and financial markets.

The milestone came only five months after debt reached $39 trillion and about 10 months after it passed $38 trillion. According to the U.S. Treasury, total public debt outstanding now stands above $40 trillion.

The increase reflects persistent federal deficits, rising defense and social spending and a growing interest bill as older debt is refinanced at higher rates.

Higher Debt Keeps Treasury Yields in Focus

The fiscal picture matters directly for markets because heavier government borrowing can put upward pressure on long-term yields.

That pressure was visible this week when Treasury yields surged before the government expanded several long-dated debt buyback operations. The move helped calm the bond market temporarily, but long-term borrowing costs remain elevated.

Higher yields typically weigh on stocks by increasing financing costs and making bonds more attractive relative to equities. The same dynamic recently pressured the stock market, particularly expensive technology shares.

Bitcoin Rallies as Bond Pressure Eases

Crypto has moved in the opposite direction. Bitcoin climbed above $72,000 after falling long-term yields helped improve risk appetite across markets.

The debt milestone itself was not the direct catalyst. Treasury buybacks, heavy short liquidations and stronger crypto policy signals from Washington all contributed to the move.

Still, rising government debt continues to support one of Bitcoin's longer-term investment narratives: persistent borrowing and fiscal deficits can increase concerns over currency debasement and the purchasing power of fiat money.

That relationship has already been visible this year. Bitcoin weakened when bond yields climbed, while the latest pullback in yields helped crypto recover.

The next major fiscal test is already approaching. The statutory debt ceiling stands at $41.1 trillion, and the Bipartisan Policy Center estimates it could become binding sometime between late winter and mid-summer 2027.
