August PCE Comes In Below Forecast

The U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index rose 3.4% year over year in August 2026, according to data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) on September 30. The print came in well below the market consensus of 3.7%, marking the lowest annualized inflation reading in six months and a meaningful step down from the July headline figure, which was simultaneously revised lower to 3.4% from an initially reported 3.7%.

On a monthly basis, both the headline PCE price index and the core PCE price index, which strips out food and energy, rose 0.3% and 0.2% respectively. Personal income increased 0.2% on the month, while personal spending expanded by a solid 0.9%, suggesting consumers remain active despite sustained price pressures.

What It Means for the Federal Reserve

The PCE index is the Federal Reserve's preferred gauge of inflation, and the softer-than-expected August reading carries real weight for the Fed's policy deliberations. With headline PCE now sitting at 3.4%, price pressures appear to be responding to the rate hike cycle that the Fed has maintained over the past several months. The data provides tentative evidence that prior tightening is filtering through to consumer-level prices.

Core PCE, which the Fed watches most closely for underlying inflation trends, came in at 3.0% annually, also below the 3.3% consensus expectation. While both measures remain well above the Fed's 2% long-run target, the back-to-back downside surprises may shift the conversation toward when, rather than whether, the central bank begins to ease policy.

The BEA also incorporated its annual update to the National Economic Accounts alongside this release, meaning prior readings across personal income, outlays, and GDP data may be subject to revision.
