US puts AI at the center of its biosecurity and biomedical research plans

The United States government aims to utilize artificial intelligence as a key element for hastening biomedical research and safeguarding against biological threats using funds worth over $5 billion that the White House announced on July 22 as part of the nationwide plan on introducing AI to research.

The authorities claimed that the funds would speed up the process of getting patients the required healthcare and ensuring the scientific edge for America.

Artificial intelligence has turned into a crucial element of the infrastructure not only in finance or software but also in healthcare, national security, and scientific research, indicating that biosecurity may be the next trend.

Researchers in search of cures, patients in search of treatment, and agencies involved in preparation are interested in this change because it connects the use of federal money and computing power to one assumption: that artificial intelligence can shorten the time needed for discovery. It comes at a time when the US government has also become more selective about who can do sensitive research and with whom, as part of its larger biosecurity and biomedical strategy.

The Genesis Mission and its biomedical arm

The White House has stated that the funding supports the Genesis Mission, which was initiated by President Trump through an executive order in November 2025 and is now running in a coordinated manner across various governmental agencies.

A total of over 15 federal departments have provided data, funding, and research facilities in accordance with the Department of Energy’s platform that connects scientists with shared computing and AI technologies. White House science director Michael Kratsios has said the mission would “dramatically increase the productivity of American scientists and researchers,” as Cryptopolitan earlier reported.

The health initiative has its own title. Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Jay Bhattacharya spoke about the launch of the Bio Genesis Mission through which scientists will be able to investigate the reasons of diseases and deliver new treatments to patients faster, with adherence to the so-called “rigorous scientific standards and responsible stewardship.”

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. connected the initiative with the campaign Make America Healthy Again, claiming that American people would “lead the next generation of medical discovery” with the help of AI. Energy Secretary Chris Wright reported that 278 initiatives were selected in the first round.

The money behind preparedness

The AI initiative is based on funding that has already been provided for biomedical projects by Congress. The Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education FY2026 appropriations bill was approved by the Senate on January 30 by a vote of 71 to 29 and by the House on February 3 by 217 to 214, before being signed into law that same day.

The bill provided $194.9 billion in discretionary funding overall, 1.6% below the comparable FY2025 level, and $48.7 billion across NIH and ARPA-H, with $47.2 billion going to NIH itself, a $415 million increase over FY2025.

Some part of this money will be used for biosecurity and response to threats. Under the bill, $3.7 billion will be allocated to the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, including $1 billion to the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, $850 million to Project BioShield, and $1 billion to the Strategic National Stockpile.

Committee Chair Susan Collins said the bill “supports lifesaving biomedical research,” with the help of targeted funding for different diseases including cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and ALS.

AI race isn’t about crypto, it’s biosecurity

The same period has imposed constraints on research itself. The National Science Foundation, which is responsible for approximately 25% of fundamental academic research in the United States, plans to prevent the scientists it supports from working with organizations that are considered security threats by the US government, including several Chinese universities, according to Nature.

The policy will take effect on October 1. At the July 15 hearing in the House of Representatives, Republican Congressman John Moolenaar of Michigan urged other government bodies to adopt the same policy, while among the Democrats, Ro Khanna warned of the deterioration of staff at the offices meant to protect research in the first place.

Biosafety regulation efforts are continuing to be a hot political topic. According to coverage by WUSF, Anthony Fauci asserted his Fifth Amendment privilege on July 29 not to answer any inquiries posed by a Senate committee chaired by Rand Paul, who has called the ex-NIAID leader a liar for hiding the origins of COVID-19. Fauci pointed out he has been answering similar questions previously.
