VanEck has introduced the Wealth Builder ETF, known by the ticker WBMO, which began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The actively managed fund brings together VanEck’s Wealth Builder model portfolios—previously available only to advisers through third-party platforms—into a single publicly accessible product for any investor with a brokerage account.
Structure and holdings
VanEck is responsible for selecting the fund’s holdings, determining their relative weights, and rebalancing the portfolio as needed. The firm currently manages approximately $244 billion in assets.
WBMO offers exposure to a diverse mix of global stocks, bonds, gold, and digital assets, aiming to provide investors with broad portfolio diversification through a single ETF.
The fund’s Bitcoin exposure is indirect. Rather than holding Bitcoin directly, WBMO utilizes a wholly owned Cayman Islands subsidiary to invest in exchange-traded products (ETPs) that either hold or track Bitcoin. This structure allows digital asset exposure within regulatory boundaries, though the prospectus does not specify an exact Bitcoin allocation target. The subsidiary’s exposure to all alternative assets, including digital assets, is generally limited to 25% of the total assets at the end of each quarter. Investors do not need a crypto wallet, seed phrase, or direct exchange account to participate in the fund’s Bitcoin allocation, nor can they control the digital asset position directly.
VanEck outlines the fund as a way to “gain exposure to a broad mix of investments across stocks, bonds, gold, and bitcoin with a single ETF purchase.”
While indirect, this method gives mainstream investors access to Bitcoin’s price movements alongside traditional asset classes.
Fees and risk considerations
The Wealth Builder ETF carries a gross expense ratio of 0.33%. After applying a fee waiver of 0.07%, the net expense ratio drops to 0.26%. It is important to note that underlying Bitcoin products within the ETF charge their own separate fees.
The allocation strategy is designed to manage volatility. Significant price swings in Bitcoin will influence the ETF, but exposure to bonds and gold may help buffer losses during downturns and soften gains during rallies.
VanEck has warned that digital asset ETPs can be extremely volatile. Some such products are not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, which means they could lack certain investor protections.
Recent activity in VanEck’s other crypto-linked fund, NODE, highlights the company’s evolving approach to digital assets. NODE raised its Bitcoin ETP allocation from about 7% at the end of June to 16.8% by September. Unlike WBMO, NODE invests in blockchain companies as well as digital assets.
Industry context and security initiatives
VanEck’s Matthew Sigel, Head of Digital Assets Research, has addressed industry concerns related to the potential impact of quantum computing on Bitcoin’s underlying cryptography. Sigel emphasized that while such risks exist, the Bitcoin ecosystem is actively collaborating to develop technical standards capable of responding to these future challenges.
Sigel explained that although technology upgrades take time due to Bitcoin’s decentralized governance, talent within the industry is working on frameworks for quantum resistance, and further advancements are expected in the coming years.
Leading companies such as Coinbase and Blockstream are already pursuing quantum-resistant security measures to safeguard digital assets. The formation of a Bitcoin Security Consortium—comprising BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Block—is supporting open-source security research, including initiatives like BIP-360.
Keeping up with rapid market changes and the evolving digital asset landscape is increasingly important for investors. In a market where a single Fed decision or a sudden altcoin listing can change everything in seconds, jumping between different apps for charts, news, and portfolio tracking is costing investors money. Smart traders are now utilizing privacy-first tools like CryptoAppsy to consolidate everything. Without even the hassle of creating an account, you get real-time charts, smart price alerts, coin-specific news, and critical macro data all on one screen.
