Real yields measure an investment return after inflation. They matter because they show how attractive safe assets such as Treasuries are compared with gold, Bitcoin and stocks.
The basic calculation is:
Real yield ≈ nominal Treasury yield − expected inflation
For example, if a 10-year Treasury yields 4.5% and expected inflation is 2.5%:
4.5% − 2.5% = 2.0% real yield
A higher real yield means investors earn more after inflation from government bonds. Lower real yields reduce that advantage and can support non-yielding or risk assets.
How Real Yields Are Measured
Investors commonly use Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS, to track real rates. TIPS adjust for inflation, so their quoted yields represent inflation-adjusted returns.
The Federal Reserve publishes TIPS-based real yield data, while the US Treasury maintains real yield curves across several maturities.
Real yields are different from the Treasury term premium. The term premium measures compensation for holding longer-term debt; real yields measure returns after inflation.

Why Real Yields Matter for Gold and Bitcoin
Gold pays no interest, so higher real yields increase the opportunity cost of holding it. When real yields fall, gold generally becomes more attractive relative to Treasuries.
That relationship is not perfect. The World Gold Council has noted that central-bank buying, fiscal concerns and geopolitical demand can support gold even when real yields remain high.
Recent gold moves again showed how falling yields and a weaker dollar can strengthen bullion.
Bitcoin reacts through a similar channel. It also produces no cash yield, so higher real rates make Treasuries relatively more attractive. Falling real yields can improve liquidity conditions and reduce the return investors give up by holding BTC.
The recent Bitcoin rally alongside falling long-term yields showed that link in practice.
Real Yields and Stocks
Stocks are affected mainly through valuation.
Higher real yields increase the discount rate applied to future earnings. That can reduce the present value of companies whose profits are expected far into the future, particularly growth and technology stocks.
This is why AI and high-growth equities can react sharply when Treasury yields rise. A recent bond selloff pushed both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq lower as long-term rates climbed.

The main takeaway is simple: real yields help measure how competitive safe bonds are relative to other assets. Rising real yields usually tighten financial conditions; falling real yields generally make gold, Bitcoin and growth stocks more attractive.
