Open any official ranking, the titans of bitcoin are called Satoshi Nakamoto, Coinbase, or Strategy. However, in the shadows, a silent revolution is brewing. What if the next big earthquake in BTC ownership doesn’t come from a billionaire or a sovereign wealth fund, but… from AI? Let’s explore a future where digital gold might find unexpected new owners.

In Brief

  • According to Arkham, Satoshi Nakamoto holds 1.096 million BTC, Coinbase 969,000, Strategy 848,000, BlackRock 799,000, Binance 714,000.
  • The largest isolated bitcoin wallet is a Binance cold wallet (249,000 BTC, 1.24% of supply).
  • According to Strategy, the MSTR stock shows 52% annualized return since August 10, 2020, versus 38% for BTC and 16% for the S&P 500 (SPY).
  • According to the BPI, 79.1% of 36 AI models’ responses choose bitcoin to preserve purchasing power.

Who Are the Biggest Bitcoin Holders in 2026?

According to an Arkham Intelligence report dated September 28, 2026, on the biggest BTC holders, Satoshi Nakamoto remains the largest bitcoin holder with 1.096 million BTC (5.5% of supply), ahead of Coinbase (969,000 BTC, 4.8%), Strategy (848,000 BTC, 4%) and BlackRock (799,000 BTC, 4%, via its bitcoin ETFs).

However, the leaderboard changes when counting by crypto wallet. The four largest individual bitcoin wallets are all exchange cold wallets, led by a Binance vault holding 249,000 BTC (1.24% of supply). Arkham specifies these custodians hold client deposits and generally do not represent exchange ownership.

Rank By Wallet BTC By Entity BTC 1 Binance, cold wallet 249,000 Satoshi Nakamoto 1,096,000 2 Binance, cold wallet 210,000 Coinbase 969,000 3 Robinhood, cold wallet 141,000 Strategy 848,000 4 Bitfinex, cold wallet 130,000 BlackRock 799,000 5 Tether, bitcoin reserves 97,000 Binance 714,000 Source: Arkham, “Top BTC Holders: Who Owns the Most Bitcoin (2026)”, 09/28/2026.

Has Strategy Outperformed the S&P 500 Since 2020?

According to a chart published by Strategy on October 5, 2026, MSTR stock shows a 52% annualized return since August 10, 2020, versus 38% for BTC, 19% for Nasdaq 100 (QQQ), and 16% for S&P 500 (SPY). However, this ranking reflects the issuer’s perspective. The period starts August 10, 2020, the beginning of the “Bitcoin standard era” according to Strategy, and other asset classes are represented by ETFs serving as substitutes (GLD for gold, VNQ for real estate, BND for bonds), the chart notes.

This looks more like a report card printed by a student where the grades might be correct, but the subject and period are chosen by them. On the stock side, Arkham attributes 848,000 BTC to Strategy (4% of supply), about 184,000 held by its custodian Fidelity Custody, and indicates it has on-chain verified only 83% of these bitcoins. Arkham also notes Strategy sold bitcoins before resuming purchases. Annualized return thus measures a price, not a buy trajectory.

Could AIs Become the Biggest Bitcoin Holders?

The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) exposed 36 AI models to monetary scenarios, resulting in 9,072 responses. 79.1% of those concerning purchasing power preservation chose BTC, according to the BPI study of March 3, 2026. BlackRock cites this result in its report on the machine-native economy but highlights the framework itself. Its Digital Assets Research team wrote on September 4, 2026:

These results reflect simulated model responses rather than observed agent behavior.

An AI agent is software capable of independently planning and executing multiple tasks, including payments. Regarding actual usage, TRM Labs estimates agents represent between 0.6% and 7.5% of $52.7 million in x402 settlements this year, with the rest more like automated scripts. But for payments between AI agents, the report primarily targets stablecoins. The 79.1% is the survey. Savings, meanwhile, are read from bank statements. And for now, AIs have an opinion on bitcoin, not a savings account.

Arkham’s podium of the biggest bitcoin holders therefore remains human and institutional: Satoshi Nakamoto, Coinbase, Strategy, BlackRock. To see a wallet of AI agents enter this list, on-chain balances will be needed, not just simulation responses. The BTC itself remains a risky asset, whatever the identity of its holder.
