From DigiCash to Bitcoin's Early Days
Long before Zcash existed, @zooko was already at the frontier of digital money. In 1996, he joined DigiCash, the early digital cash company founded by cryptographer David Chaum that aimed to allow online payments without revealing user identity. When DigiCash collapsed in 1998, Wilcox did not walk away from the idea. He spent the following decade chasing the same goal through different projects, including Tahoe-LAFS, a distributed storage system built around privacy and security.
Then Bitcoin arrived and changed everything. In January 2009, Wilcox was among the first people to publicly write about it. Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto subsequently linked to Wilcox's blog post from the Bitcoin project's own website, a small but telling detail about how early and how seriously he engaged with the technology.
Building Zcash and Stepping Back
By 2015, Wilcox had turned his attention to a new problem: Bitcoin's lack of financial privacy. Every transaction on the Bitcoin network is visible on a public ledger, exposing senders, recipients, and amounts. Together with a team of cryptographers and researchers, he co-founded the Electric Coin Company and set out to build something better. @Zcash launched in October 2016 as a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that gave users the option to shield their transactions using zero-knowledge proofs, a form of cryptography that lets the network verify a transaction is valid without revealing any of its private details.
Unlike Bitcoin, $ZEC allows users to choose between transparent and shielded transactions, hiding the sender, receiver, and amount when privacy is selected. The network drew on research from institutions including Johns Hopkins University and MIT, and was one of the first large-scale applications of zero-knowledge proofs outside of academia.
Wilcox led the Electric Coin Company as CEO for over seven years. In December 2023, he handed the role to Josh Swihart (@jswihart), saying at the time that Zcash had begun to take over his identity. He has since remained involved in the broader privacy ecosystem.
