Global search engine giant Google has announced the top combined stories Nigerians searched for on the platform between January and July 2026. The top stories signify trending moments and what caught Nigerians’ interest during the period.
In an email shared with Technext on Friday, the report highlighted the top trending searches and offered insights into what Nigerians were interested in seeing, doing and learning about.
The company revealed that the FIFA World Cup 2026 led in the most searched stories, while the AFCON 2025 semi-final between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Atlas Lions of Morocco dominated search entries. Also, the Strait of Hormuz closure that inflated fuel prices, the Blord vs VDM social media war, and the “67” meme among Gen Z also attracted significant search interest.
Commenting on the report, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager, West Africa, at Google, said Search has become a reliable mirror of national attention and the issues that matter to Nigerians.
“When something matters in this country, it trends on Search before it reaches the front page.”
He added that, “Nigerians did not just watch these stories; they interrogated them: the shootout, the strait, the files, the meme. Seven months of data says the same thing every month.”
While the stories and trending searches have defined the past seven months, they showed the extent of Nigerians’ reliance on Google for clarification, learning and using trending data to be aware of top discussions.
The top 10 combined stories in 2026 so farThe list contains a combination of moments that fall under the same category or are grouped based on the similarity of moments.
1. 2026 FIFA World CupEven when the Super Eagles of Nigeria missed out on the greatest global football competition, Nigerians were still glued to their screen and smartphones. It became interesting, considering that most of the matches were streamed in Nigeria at midnight, owing to time zones.
The FIFA World Cup generated the largest search volumes of the period. Particularly, Nigerians followed Shakira and Burna Boy’s performance of “Dai Dai” at the Mexico City opening ceremony till the final match between Spain and Argentina.

AFCON 2025: Nigeria vs MoroccoThe year opened with the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, but the semi-final match between “Nigeria vs Morocco” was one of the biggest single queries of 2026, according to Google. Even when the Super Eagles lost the semi-final on penalties to the hosts, Nigerians still followed through with searches for “AFCON final”.
Eventually, Senegal lifted the trophy on January 18, with aftermath controversies. The search that dominated the competition was on fixtures, results, and the heartbreaks.

3. The Strait of HormuzThe U.S. – Iran war that has defined global economic conditions is definitely worth a search for Nigerians. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, as a result of the global tensions, was attributed to Nigeria’s surge in fuel price from ₦800/850 to ₦1,300/1,400.
Nigerians reacted by searching for “Iran news”, “Israel Iran war” and, tellingly, “strait of hormuz meaning”. The fuel price increase also affected transportation costs and the prices of goods and services. A war about three thousand miles away from Nigeria had a drastic impact, more so with the removal of the subsidy.
4. Blord vs VDMThe popular feud between crypto entrepreneur Blord (Linus Williams Ifejirika) and social media activist VeryDarkMan (Martins Vincent Otse) kept search interest high for months. It was also marred by Blord’s arrest, his remand in Kuje prison in April and his release on bail sixteen days later. Nigerians searching for “Who is Blord” ran alongside the main queries.

5. Nigeria at Winter OlympicsBeyond football, Nigerians also showed significant interest in the Winter Olympics at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games.
Google said the games drew some of the heaviest search traffic of the entire period, ice hockey included. With Nigeria having no team on the ice, it shows how curiosity is one of Google Search’s major drivers.
6. The sad goodbyes: Alexx, Eric, Destiny BoyNigerians experienced grief from the passing of some celebrities during the first seven months. However, three celebrity deaths generated particularly strong search interest.
First, Afrofuji singer Destiny Boy died in January at just 22. Particularly, the homicide investigation and autopsy that followed kept his name in the headlines for weeks. Second, Eric Dane of Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria died of ALS in February.

7. “67”, the OPay sagaThe controversial Gen Z meme, “67”, peaked in January. Pronounced “six-seven”, it was a confusing, viral internet meme and ambiguous slang term popular with Gen Alpha. It has no fixed or literal meaning but is often used as a nonsensical catchphrase, an exclamation, or a vague answer to any question such as “How old are you?” or “What time is it?”
There was also the OPay-related trend in April involving customer Opeyemi Awodoyin, who received ₦100,000 in error but declined to return it. It briefly became the subject of a national morality debate.

8. Saleh Mamman’s ₦33 billion fraud and politicsIt was the Saleh Mamman case that triggered renewed calls for accountability. The former Nigerian Minister of Power was sentenced to 75 years over a ₦33 billion fraud after his arrest by the EFCC in a pre-dawn raid in Kaduna in May.

The Nigerian media personality and TV host confirmed in May 2026 that he and his second wife, Sandra Onyenucheya, had been separated for nearly two years and were undergoing formal divorce proceedings.
