Xaman, the self-custodial wallet built by XRPL Labs for the XRP Ledger and Xahau networks, has grown quickly enough to create a real infrastructure problem. The wallet, formerly known as Xumm, is now placing measurable strain on XRPL node capacity, with a fix reportedly in the works.
User Growth Behind the Strain
An annual review snapshot showed roughly 735,000 active users, reflecting a 45.8% increase over the prior period.Separate 2024 metrics pegged the active user count above 600,000, with the platform logging hundreds of millions of in-app interactions across its lifespan.
The mechanics behind the pressure are straightforward. Each new Xaman account requires activation on the ledger itself, with a base reserve of 1 XRP needed to maintain an account. The base reserve is a minimum amount of XRP that is required for each address in the ledger.Reserved XRP cannot be sent to others, though some can be recovered by deleting the account. At the scale Xaman has reached, these mandatory activations are adding up fast.
The volume of accounts is now bumping up against what some XRPL nodes can efficiently handle. Push notifications were briefly disrupted as a result.
A Fix Is Coming
The fix being referenced for the capacity issue appears to be a more targeted response, potentially outside the formal amendment process or running on a faster timeline.
Xaman is built by XRPL Labs and serves as the primary self-custodial mobile gateway to the XRP Ledger and Xahau networks, letting users create and manage XRPL accounts, execute transactions, set up trust lines, trade on the ledger's built-in decentralized exchange, and interact with NFTs. The episode highlights a broader tension in blockchain ecosystems: rapid adoption can expose infrastructure limits that were not designed with mass-scale use in mind, even on a network as established as the XRP Ledger.
