XRP Kuwait, a validator node operator on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), has publicly refuted allegations that it has compromised its independence following an urgent network-wide security update. The dispute centers on the recent implementation of xrpld version 3.4.1, a critical patch that was installed across many node operators nearly simultaneously, raising concerns about the true level of network decentralization.
Security vulnerability prompts urgent response
The necessity for the rapid update arose after a payment engine vulnerability was discovered in XRPL’s codebase. This flaw, dating as far back as 2015, involved an integer overflow issue that surfaced when processing a high volume of trade offers. If the aggregate exceeded a particular limit, the variable would reset to zero, inadvertently allowing recipients to access the full intended amount while only a minor value—the “remainder”—was removed from the sender’s balance.
This anomaly inadvertently created unauthorized XRP coins, bypassing the protocol’s issuance restrictions and undermining the integrity of token supply. The situation escalated due to the built-in safeguard, the invariant check, which also failed because of a related overflow. The speed at which node operators enabled the protection following the upgrade, without a standard network vote, quickly became a focal point among critics questioning the actual independence of validators in crisis scenarios.

Centralization concerns arise
The simultaneous patch deployment led some in the crypto community to accuse XRPL of covert centralization. They argued that coordinated actions among node operators, particularly during emergencies, contradict the fundamental principle of validator independence and distributed governance. XRP Kuwait firmly disputed this narrative, drawing a line between necessary coordination and centralized control.
Coordination among operators during software upgrades does not equate to centralized control over the network. Such participation in emergency responses, according to XRP Kuwait, does not replace independent judgment held by each validator.
Additional fixes to maintain ledger integrity
In a separate incident, the team released another fix for a vulnerability in the Batch mechanism (specifically XLS-56), where servers would approve internal transactions missing the essential RawTransaction wrapper. This posed risks including software inconsistency and consensus breakdown, threatening the stability of the blockchain. The issue was addressed through the activation of the fixBatchV1_2 amendment, which was successfully integrated into the network on October 9, closing the loophole and ensuring continued chain reliability.

XRPL Foundation confirms vulnerability closure
The XRPL Foundation, an independent body providing technical stewardship for the network, confirmed that the vulnerabilities had been resolved before any exploitation occurred. There have been no reported losses, and all servers running outdated versions are now completely amendment-blocked, isolating them from the main chain.
According to the XRPL Foundation, older, unpatched servers have been severed from synchronization, preventing any potential exposure from these vulnerabilities.
Despite the ongoing debate, XRP Kuwait acknowledged that the network continues to face challenges related to decentralization. Representatives admitted, “We do not claim that XRPL has no decentralization challenges,” recognizing the difficulties inherent in managing distributed infrastructure under operational stress.
At the same time, the validator maintained that defending the integrity of the ledger during critical moments still aligns with the principles of technological autonomy. The operator insisted that quick, collective action during emergencies does not negate true validator independence or XRPL’s ongoing pursuit of decentralized governance.
