Ripple (@Ripple) CTO Emeritus David Schwartz (@JoelKatz) says retail decentralized finance (DeFi) could become far more compelling in 2027. He made the remarks in a recent interview, pointing to the growth of tokenization and a gradual fall in regulatory barriers.
Schwartz is a co-founder of Ripple and a key architect of the XRP Ledger (XRPL). In the interview, he said tokenization is "really kicking off" across the industry and that regulatory barriers are beginning to fall.
AI agents and everyday users
Schwartz also raised the possibility of AI agents managing people's finances. That could change what ordinary users expect from DeFi products. He compared the opportunity to how mobile apps reached users on major smartphone platforms, even when those users did not understand the underlying technology.
The interview was published on October 18 on the Thinking Crypto Podcast, following Evernorth's Nasdaq closing bell ceremony. Evernorth is listed under the ticker XRPN.
Schwartz did not announce a new product or confirm a DeFi launch in 2027, and he gave no timetable for the changes he discussed. His comments are best read as an outlook rather than a roadmap.
Community view and what still needs to happen
Meanwhile, XRP Ledger $XRP community member Vet considers 2027 the year retail DeFi on the XRP Ledger could become a breakthrough for DeFi in general. The 2027 timeline comes from Vet's commentary, not from a confirmed Ripple announcement.
Some of the infrastructure is still moving through the approval process. The XRPL's native lending feature has not yet launched. The original lending amendments had collected 19 to 21 validator votes as of October 18 to 19, against roughly 29 needed for activation, which corresponds to an 80% threshold. Developers have also published a follow-up amendment, LendingProtocolV1_1, to fix issues before launch.
The lending design is aimed at institutional-style credit, with loan terms enforced on-chain while underwriting happens off-chain. For retail DeFi to reach ordinary users, tools like this would need to clear validator voting first, and there is no clear activation date.
