The XRP Ledger’s plan to introduce a native lending protocol is still awaiting the necessary validator approval, as a separate system upgrade continues on track for its expected launch this week.

Lending Protocol Vote Stalls, Network Upgrade Progresses

As of October 20, voting data indicated that both LendingProtocol and LendingProtocolV1_1 proposals had received support from 19 validators each, leaving them 10 votes short of the 29 needed to proceed. The SingleAssetVault component, which is also fundamental for the lending protocol’s infrastructure, had secured 21 votes.

Activation requires amendments to maintain at least 80% validator support for two consecutive weeks. With current figures nearly unchanged from mid-October, the lending system remains ineligible for immediate implementation, even if it gains enough backing in the coming days.

At the same time, the fixCleanup3_4_0 network amendment has achieved and held the supermajority required for activation. This upgrade is set to enter effect after its two-week approval period ends on Friday, keeping it on course for completion around October 23, pending continued validator support.

The fixCleanup3_4_0 amendment includes major corrections for Single Asset Vault calculations, loan-default procedures, automated market makers, escrow flows, and token permission risks. A technical flaw that previously allowed accounts with delegated burn authority to inadvertently create new tokens will also be addressed through this fix. Current XRP Ledger documentation advises against assigning PaymentBurn permission until the patch goes live.

Key Technical Fixes Ahead

The latest release notes from the XRP Ledger team underscore that the update will enhance rounding for vault deposits and withdrawals, helping to reduce miscalculations when converting assets to vault shares. Experts view these efforts as part of a broader drive to enhance security and operational reliability before activating wider financial services on the network.

The proposed lending framework depends on approval of three interconnected amendments: SingleAssetVault, LendingProtocol, and LendingProtocolV1_1. If passed, users would be able to pool XRP or other supported assets, receive shares representing their deposits, and enable loan brokers to manage fixed-term loans with pooled capital. The more recent LendingProtocolV1_1 offers further updates, such as the introduction of closed-ended vaults and revised models for recognizing interest income.

However, none of these proposals has met the activation requirements yet. The validator support recorded this week closely matches levels from earlier in October, signaling protracted consensus-building among network operators.

Even if validator support were to surge above the minimum immediately, the necessary two-week window means activation cannot occur until at least early November.

Lending Architecture and Institutional Potential

If all measures are eventually approved, the XRP Ledger could soon allow institutions to deploy pooled XRP and tokenized assets into credit markets natively. The model differs from other decentralized finance (DeFi) approaches by emphasizing off-chain borrower assessments and first-loss capital instead of the heavy over-collateralization typical in the sector. This approach, while streamlining access to credit, inherently amplifies credit risk even when repayments and loans are executed on-chain.

RippleX has suggested that XRP may serve as institutional collateral in specific contexts, but clarified that its native lending protocol is currently designed for uncollateralized arrangements. The inclusion of closed-ended vaults, proposed under LendingProtocolV1_1, would enforce fixed withdrawal timetables, influencing how much XRP remains liquid at a given time.

Given the rapid changes that can occur due to Federal Reserve announcements or sudden altcoin listings, many market participants are seeking efficient ways to monitor multiple market signals. In this environment, traders are turning to privacy-focused tools like CryptoAppsy, which bring together real-time charts, smart price alerts, asset-specific news, and macroeconomic indicators—all accessible without an account and on a single interface.

The XRP Ledger’s lending initiative remains in limbo pending validator consensus, while the forthcoming upgrade aims to resolve long-standing technical and security issues across the ecosystem.
