Recent days have seen a dramatic surge and subsequent decline in transaction activity on the XRP Ledger, the public blockchain network underlying the XRP cryptocurrency. According to data from XRPScan, daily payment volume on the ledger soared by 2,633% on October 25, followed by a doubling on October 26 and a further increase of 32.8% on October 27. The flurry of activity proved short-lived, as total daily volume dropped 45.1% on October 28, settling at approximately 200.8 million XRP.

Transaction volumes spike and retreat

On October 25, the XRP Ledger processed roughly 137.7 million XRP. This figure climbed to 275.5 million the following day and nearly 366 million on October 27, marking a rapid three-day ascent in on-chain payments. Despite this uptick, these volumes remained below the ledger’s 30-day average of 480.6 million XRP, highlighting the uncharacteristically low base from which the spike started.

A look at yearly data reveals that sudden swings in activity are not unprecedented for the XRP Ledger. Over the past twelve months, the network has experienced multiple significant spikes, with daily volumes sometimes hitting 2.5 billion XRP. The historical all-time high for a single day is 7 billion XRP. In this context, the most recent surge, while visually startling, represents only a moderate increase relative to longer-term peaks. The magnitude of the move appeared large mainly because it followed a sustained period of subdued activity.

Market observers noted that, while the jump reached 2,633%, it remained well below both monthly and yearly records for payment volume. This increase was attributed to the unusually low starting point rather than a substantial improvement in underlying demand.

Price action remains subdued

Parallel to the ledger’s payment activity, XRP’s price offered little in the way of bullish momentum. On the daily chart, the token is trading near $1.33, still down from its late September high of $1.65. After a mid-October dip below $1.30, XRP has struggled to break out above several resistance levels tied to key moving averages. The first notable barrier appears at $1.33, followed by a more challenging range between $1.36 and $1.38. The market trend is considered fragile until XRP can close decisively above this upper zone with increased trading volume.

Trading activity reflects this caution. Volume has tapered off since the early October correction, and recent sessions have shown little fresh buying pressure. The Relative Strength Index (RSI), a measure of momentum, remains close to 48, conveying a neutral signal and indicating a lack of strong directional bias in the market.

Historical price support is found near $1.25, where buyers stepped in twice during October to prevent further downside. Should this level fail, analysts highlight $1.10 as the next potential support zone. Conversely, a move above $1.38 with high turnover would be seen as a sign of renewed strength.

Short-term burst lacks sustained momentum

Despite the headline-grabbing percentage increase in ledger activity, there has been no sustained shift in buying demand or price trend. Typically, a lasting rally would require several consecutive days of rising volume and a confirmed uptrend on price charts, conditions not present in the current scenario.

The disconnect between a surge in on-chain transactions and stagnant price action suggests that the recent activity may have been isolated or technical in nature, rather than signaling a fundamental change in market dynamics or investor sentiment for XRP Ledger and the XRP cryptocurrency.
