XRPL Emerges as a Leading Network for AI-Driven Payments
The XRP Ledger processed more than 8 million x402-based payments in a single 30-day period, according to @chandler_agi, co-founder of @t54ai and a former product lead at @Ripple. The figure places $XRP Ledger among the most active blockchains for autonomous, AI-driven transactions, surpassing nearly all other layer-1 networks on this measure.
The milestone is a product of rapidly accelerating momentum. The XRP Ledger crossed 10 million x402 payments in total by October 1, less than three months after recording its first million. More than 8 million payments in one month works out to an average of above 266,000 transactions per day. The live XRPL AI Hub now tracks more than 12.7 million transactions all-time alongside 164 registered merchants, with a latest seven-day average of around 350,460 payments per day.
What Is the x402 Protocol and Why Does It Matter?
x402 is an HTTP-native payment protocol that revives the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code for instant blockchain payments. In practical terms, it lets software agents pay for digital services, such as API access or compute resources, without human involvement, account creation, or traditional API keys. On the XRP Ledger, the x402 protocol allows seamless, trust-minimized transfers in XRP and RLUSD for APIs and digital services.
The x402 facilitator, provided by Ripple partner t54, acts as a trust layer and mediator, enabling verification of agent payments and risk checks before settlement. Agent payments on the XRP Ledger also now support Mastercard's Verifiable Intent standard, which lets developers attach a cryptographic proof to each x402 payment confirming who authorized it, under what spending limits, and for which exact purchase, all screened before settlement.
The broader x402 ecosystem is growing quickly too. The Linux Foundation operationally launched the x402 Foundation on July 14, 2026, uniting Visa, Mastercard, Coinbase, Stripe, and 13 other premier members around one open standard for AI agents to pay for goods and services over HTTP.
For the XRP Ledger, the next test is expanding the merchant side. The XRPL AI Hub currently lists services spanning AI inference, crypto research, market intelligence, risk tools, and other paid APIs, with more than 160 addresses actively receiving x402 payments. As @chandler_agi noted, the focus is shifting from raw transaction counts toward bringing more merchants into XRPL's agentic economy.
