Rippleannounced on Oct. 26 that it has secured final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to launch its own national trust bank in the United States.

While a regular bank accepts deposits and lends funds, a national trust bank only safeguards assets and isn't permitted to undertake traditional banking functions such as taking deposits or lending.

A national trust bank is commonly used for custody, settlement, and fiduciary services, making it a suitable option for crypto and tokenized assets.

For companies like Ripple, a national trust bank status offers federal oversight and legitimacy without the regular risks of running a consumer-facing bank.

The leading blockchain and crypto payments company received a conditional OCC approval in December 2025 and it has now secured the final approval within a year.

The Ripple National Trust Bank's (RNTB) approved activities include:

  • Managing the segregated reserves supporting its RLUSD stablecoin
  • Acting as collateral trustee of the reserves for the benefit of RLUSD holders
  • Providing fiduciary digital asset custody services to enterprises.

A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency that tries to stabilize its value by getting pegged 1:1 to a so-called stable asset like the U.S. dollar. It is backed by U.S. dollar deposits, U.S. government securities, and other cash equivalents.

In short, a U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin is a digital dollar existing on a blockchain network.

As per the onchain analytics platform DeFiLlama, RLUSD has a market capitalization of $2.5 billion and accounts for 0.86% of the total stablecoin market.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said, “For years, we’ve said crypto and banks work better together. Final approval for Ripple National Trust Bank is what that looks like in practice."

XRP rises after Ripple secures final OCC approval

Launched in 2012, XRP is the native cryptocurrency of the XRP Ledger. Some of the members, such as Jed McCaleb, David Schwartz, and Arthur Britto, who developed the blockchain network, later went on to found Ripple Labs (originally OpenCoin).

Following Ripple's latest regulatory win in the U.S., XRP rose more than 2% in the last 24 hours to trade at $1.31.
