The XRP Ledger is expanding its role in machine-to-machine payments as developers gain access to new integrations designed for AI agents.
The XRP Ledger Foundation announced on X that XRPL now supports the Open Wallet Standard and serves as a settlement option for the Machine Payments Protocol developed by Tempo and Stripe through the latest version of the XRPL AI Starter Kit.
The update gives developers new ways to connect AI agents with XRPL-based wallets and payment systems while keeping XRP at the center of the payment process.
XRPL Added To Open Wallet Standard
The XRPL AI Starter Kit v1.1 supports the Open Wallet Standard, an open specification that provides a common wallet interface across multiple blockchain networks.
The standard uses a single encrypted vault for wallet storage and allows agents to request signatures through a common interface. With XRPL support, developers can create an OWS wallet that derives an XRPL address alongside addresses for other supported networks.
The RippleX Developers article explains that this approach removes the need for developers to create separate key-management systems for each blockchain. Agents can access XRPL signing capabilities through the same policy-controlled interface used for other supported networks.
The update also includes documentation for creating an OWS-backed XRPL wallet, connecting it to an AI agent and completing a signed payment without exposing the raw private key to the agent.
XRP Becomes A Settlement Option For Machine Payments
The latest Starter Kit also adds XRPL support for the Machine Payments Protocol, an open standard co-authored by Tempo and Stripe for HTTP-based payments between agents and online services.
Under the protocol, a service can return a 402 payment request with a specified price. The agent then authorizes the payment before access to the requested resource.
XRPL currently supports single MPP payments using XRP, IOUs, and MPTs. The RippleX Developers article says these payments can settle on XRPL within 3–5 seconds with sub-cent fees. It also points to deterministic finality, which gives applications a clear confirmation outcome rather than requiring them to manage an ambiguous pending state.
Payment Channels Enable Streaming Transactions
The integration also supports session payments through XRP Ledger Payment Channels. Instead of recording every individual service interaction as a separate transaction, an agent can open a payment channel and issue signed vouchers as it consumes a service.
The provider can verify those vouchers locally and settle the accumulated amount with an on-chain transaction when the session ends. The article states that the session can use two on-chain transactions: one to open the channel and another to close it.
The Starter Kit also introduces xrpl-mpp-sdk, which handles the 402 challenge-response process, credential signing, and session management for the supported payment modes. Stablecoin support for payment-channel sessions is also developed through XLS-93d.
The v1.1 release further adds xrpl-up, a local testing environment for developers, alongside an XRPL DEX trading skill for autonomous trading applications.
The XRP Ledger Foundation’s announcement therefore points to a broader developer push around AI payments, with XRP serving as the primary asset for payment-channel sessions as XRPL connects with emerging open standards for wallets and machine payments.
