Dogecoin has held up better than Nike stock over the past five years, according to a comparison published by CoinGecko on Friday. Dogecoin is a digital currency that began in 2013 based on a popular internet meme of a Shiba Inu dog. It then grew into one of the best-known cryptocurrencies.
The data, shared on X, pits the meme coin against the sportswear giant from October 2, 2021, to today, a side-by-side that caught attention given how differently the two assets are usually viewed.
According to the data shared by the tracker, five years ago, Dogecoin traded at $0.223, while Nike shares stood at $149.60.
Both were near multi-year highs at the time, riding separate waves of retail enthusiasm and pandemic-era consumer spending.
Where they stand today
As per the data, Dogecoin now trades near $0.096, down roughly 87% from its 2021 level. Nike has fared worse, trading around $35.22, a 76% decline over the same stretch.
Based on market value, Dogecoin's market capitalization is roughly $15.10 billion as the 11th-largest cryptocurrency, while Nike remains the larger company overall at $52.14 billion.
Both assets went through sharp swings to get here. Dogecoin saw several major rallies and corrections tied to crypto cycles and social media attention. Meanwhile Nike dealt with its own business pressures that weighed on the stock through the period.
CoinGecko's comparison doesn't declare a winner outright, since both assets lost significant value and carried heavy volatility along the way.

The bigger picture
The comparison lands as Dogecoin draws fresh attention elsewhere. Onchain data shows Robinhood-linked wallets holding $2.88 billion in Dogecoin, part of a broader $24.96 billion tracked across the platform's holdings.
Whether that interest translates into price strength remains to be seen.
In a lighter moment from the crypto world, Dogecoin co-creator Billy Markus has offered a tongue-in-cheek alternative to President Donald Trump’s proposed $5,000 dividend.

In a speech on Sept.9 at the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas, Trump has promised to send $5,000 to every adult American if Republicans keep control of both the House and the Senate in the November elections. With about 270 million adults in the U.S., the plan would cost more than $1 trillion. He hasn't said how the payments would be funded or handed out.
Markus suggested the government could instead purchase $1.2 trillion worth of Dogecoin and distribute the tokens to Americans.
Markus’ proposal appears to be a playful take on the idea of direct government payments, swapping a traditional cash dividend for a massive Dogecoin distribution.
