Coinbase and Stablecore bring crypto inside local banking apps
@coinbase is partnering with Stablecore to put digital asset custody, trading, and stablecoin payments directly inside community banks' own apps, with Amarillo National Bank in Texas already live on the platform. The move marks a notable push to bring regulated crypto services to everyday banking customers through institutions they already trust.
Stablecore raised $20 million from Coinbase Ventures and Norwest to embed stablecoin payments, tokenized deposits, and broader digital asset services into the core banking infrastructure that community institutions already operate. The startup's white-label software plugs into widely used core banking platforms, meaning banks do not need to rebuild their technology from scratch. Coinbase supplies custody and exchange infrastructure on the back end.
The timing is deliberate. In September 2026, Stablecore also announced a partnership with Nasdaq Verafin, a financial crime detection platform, to extend anti-money-laundering and fraud monitoring across both fiat and stablecoin transactions. That compliance layer is likely to be a key selling point for cautious community bank boards weighing up whether to adopt digital asset services.
The broader regulatory landscape has also shifted in favour of these deals. The GENIUS Act, signed into law in July 2025, established the first major federal framework for payment stablecoins in the United States, giving banks clearer legal ground to engage with digital assets inside regulated environments.
For customers, the practical outcome could be straightforward: the ability to buy, hold, and use digital assets through a familiar local banking app, without needing an account on a standalone crypto exchange.
