The FCA opened its authorization gateway on Wednesday, and the clock is now running for every crypto firm that wants to keep operating in the UK. The new regime takes effect on October 25, 2027, covering stablecoin issuance, trading platforms, custody, arranging deals, staking, and market abuse. Firms seeking transitional provisions, meaning they want the FCA to assess their application before the regime goes live, need to apply by February 28, 2027. Existing registration under the UK’s Money Laundering Regulations does not carry over. For example, a firm that went through the old AML registration process cannot assume it has already cleared the new bar. As Emma Banymandhub, CEO of payments trade body The Payments Association, put it, firms need to treat this as a fresh authorization process and be realistic about the standards they’ll need to meet. For international firms serving UK customers, the same rules apply. No FCA authorization after October 2027 means operating illegally in the market.
Smaller firms may find things a little harder because the new regime requires firms to have legal support, compliance systems, governance structures, and technology in place. Larger exchanges, obviously, can absorb those costs more easily compared to smaller firms, which have less room to maneuver. For some, the math is something they need to figure out quickly, and for others, it honestly may not work.
A few other stories worth your attention this week:
- Citi raised its 12-month Bitcoin price target from $82,000 to $113,000 on October 1, citing stronger on-chain activity, improved macro conditions, and recovering ETF demand. The bank started 2026 with a $143,000 target, cut it twice to reach $82,000 by July, and has now reversed course. It also forecasts $5 billion in crypto ETF inflows over the next 12 months.
- Five years after making Bitcoin legal tender, El Salvador is pivoting to dollar-backed stablecoins for everyday payments. The government is working with software startup Modveon to build a state-backed app called Sivar on Coinbase’s Base network, aimed at remittances and daily transactions. Bitcoin remains legal tender, and the government still holds over 6,300 BTC, but crypto remittances accounted for just 0.7% of total remittances in the first half of 2026.
- September was the worst month for crypto theft so far in 2026. PeckShield tracked 55 incidents totalling $766.5 million in losses. CertiK counted 97 incidents at $768.4 million. Two attacks drove more than 90% of the damage: a $388 million breach of Bitget’s hot wallet and a $320 million exploit on the Liquid Network, roughly $285 million of which was later returned.
- EU regulators are pressing Binance over its continued use of a legal exemption to serve European customers, despite an order to wind down its operations in the bloc.
In AI, Nvidia chips are now being seriously discussed as loan collateral on Wall Street, with banks struggling to agree on how they would value them in a default scenario. It is a new version of an old problem. What is an asset worth when there is no established market for it under distress? Separately, Nvidia launched an Open Agent Safety Platform with more than 100 partners to govern and secure AI agents. The company building the hardware that runs AI is now also building the guardrails for what runs on it.
From the FCA’s authorization countdown to September’s record-breaking hack losses, this week had no shortage of storylines. If you missed anything, here’s your catch-up.
