Zcash surged to an all-time high above $1,480 following a series of important governance updates and strong market momentum, as development teams scheduled the NU7 mainnet upgrade for November 5. This rapid price rally positioned Zcash as one of the most prominent privacy coins in recent market action.

NU7 Upgrade Details Finalized

Zcash, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency created in 2016, is preparing for its next major network upgrade. Core developer Sean Bowe stated that testnet activation for the NU7 protocol enhancement will begin on October 6. The final decision regarding the mainnet deployment is set for October 20, subject to successful testnet evaluation.

According to development team statements, the NU7 upgrade will reduce Zcash’s average block interval from 75 seconds to just 25 seconds. This change is intended to increase transaction throughput and efficiency for the network. Additionally, version 4 transaction formats will be removed, while the implementation of the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM) seeks to support long-term resilience.

The NSM will maintain Zcash’s existing halving schedule, gradually releasing previously removed token supply starting in February 2031. The upgrade is not expected to introduce new transaction formats, and wallet services will experience minimal impact. However, full node operators, indexers, and explorer platforms may require technical adaptations.

Zcash’s development involves multiple collaborative teams working to enhance privacy and scalability. Overwhelming community support for the latest protocol changes led to a 99.9% approval rate for reducing block intervals, while 98.9% favored keeping the current halving models unchanged.

Mini dictionary: Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), a protocol in Zcash designed to ensure the network’s continued operation and funding by gradually reintroducing previously unissued coin supply, while maintaining the halving cycle.

Developers announced that the conclusive block height for NU7’s mainnet activation will be determined after October 20, following the testnet’s successful operation. The upgrade is designed to improve transaction speed, while ensuring continuity in the coin’s monetary policy.

Price Rally and Key Technical Levels

On Thursday, Zcash’s native token ZEC rose by nearly 20% in 24 hours, reaching a record high above $1,480. The rally coincided with a broader surge in privacy coins, which are currently trading at levels 213% higher than those seen during the Bitcoin rally of October 2025, according to Glassnode data.

Market analyst Ali Charts commented on the move, sharing on X that ZEC continues to “push higher” and is advancing toward a first target of $1,800, a key resistance zone.

Momentum in ZEC remains strong, with the price exceeding $1,400 and approaching the next resistance at $1,800. Major support is identified near $1,005.

At present, ZEC is trading well above its 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day exponential moving averages, which are positioned at $869, $710, and $571, respectively. Technical indicators show strong support at $1,005 with little immediate resistance observed on daily charts.

Indicator Current ZEC Level Price $1,400+ All-time high $1,480 50-day EMA $869 100-day EMA $710 200-day EMA $571 Key support $1,005 Next resistance $1,800

Futures Market and Community Participation

Open interest in ZEC futures sharply increased to 2.3 million tokens, up from 1.76 million on the previous day, reflecting elevated retail engagement. This marks the highest activity since early August.

The funding rate for futures shifted negative for the second consecutive day, indicating that long position holders are not compensating shorts, which often reflects a crowded market dynamic. The Relative Strength Index stands at 71, highlighting that ZEC has entered overbought territory. Additionally, the MACD indicator persists in positive territory, signaling ongoing upside momentum.

Community engagement has played a significant role in the upgrade process, with near-unanimous approval for both the accelerated block time and the preservation of the current halving model. Final activation of the NU7 mainnet upgrade will depend on outcomes from the upcoming testnet phase and is currently scheduled for no later than November 5.
