Zcash ($ZEC) is set to activate its Ironwood network upgrade on July 28, 2026. The protocol change triggers at block height 3,428,143, expected around midday UTC. For a project built around financial privacy, the release carries material consequences for both users and node operators.

What the Ironwood Upgrade Changes

The upgrade introduces the Ironwood shielded pool, replacing the existing Orchard pool as the primary destination for private transactions. It also restricts the prior Orchard pool following an earlier soundness issue that was addressed, and strengthens circulating-supply verification through a turnstile mechanism.

The turnstile is one of the more consequential elements of the release. It forces all shielded coins to migrate through a checkpoint that verifies legitimate supply and destroys any counterfeit ZEC. The result is a cryptographic audit of the network's true circulating supply, something the protocol has not previously been able to provide in a straightforward way.

On the quantum side, the upgrade implements ZIP 2005. The proposal changes how notes are constructed in the Ironwood pool, designed to improve Zcash's long-term resilience against quantum computers, though it does not by itself make the protocol fully secure against quantum adversaries. Rather, it is designed as groundwork for a smoother future transition. The existing Zcash shielded protocols depend on the hardness of finding discrete logarithms. In the event those protocols needed to be disabled to prevent a quantum attack, a Recovery Protocol would allow funds held in the Ironwood pool to be retrieved.

From the activation height onward, every Ironwood-pool output note uses the quantum-recoverable note plaintext format defined in ZIP 2005.

What Node Operators and Wallet Users Need to Know

Node operators, wallets, and exchanges need to be prepared ahead of the activation, and temporary service interruptions are possible for infrastructure that is not ready. The upgrade also coincides with a broader software transition. It lands alongside the shift from zcashd to the Z3 stack, meaning node operators must move to Zebra.

Migrating funds out of the Orchard pool ahead of the upgrade means users gain both quantum recoverability and the improvement in supply-integrity confidence that NU6.3 provides.
