What Is Kral Accused Of?

Przemysław Kral, the head of collapsed cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto, has reportedly been charged with participating in a large-scale fraud as Polish prosecutors investigate missing customer funds and the exchange’s financial relationships. Reports on Monday said investigators now estimate customer losses at at least 2.4 billion Polish zlotys, or roughly $650 million. Prosecutors have not publicly confirmed either the reported charge against Kral or the new loss estimate. The figure would represent a steep increase from the minimum 350 million zlotys disclosed when authorities opened their investigation on April 17. Officials warned at the time that the number of victims and total losses were expected to increase as more complaints were processed. Investigators reportedly suspect that only part of the money deposited by customers was used to buy cryptocurrency, while other funds were transferred to private accounts controlled by people managing the exchange. The allegations have not been proven in court, and Kral has previously denied misappropriating customer money. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice has confirmed that its investigation covers suspected fraud and possible money laundering connected with activity dating from 2022.

Why Could Kral's Cooperation Matter?

Kral has reportedly begun providing information to prosecutors under Article 60 of Poland’s Criminal Code, a mechanism that can allow extraordinary sentence mitigation when a suspect provides authorities with information about other participants and important circumstances surrounding an offense. That does not give him immunity. Kral would remain a suspect, and any reduction in punishment would depend on whether the legal requirements for cooperation are ultimately met. By June, prosecutors had registered more than 3,600 criminal complaints, interviewed nearly 1,000 alleged victims and questioned another 40 people believed to have information about the suspected activity. Investigators had also seized 162 electronic devices, secured more than 250 terabytes of files from Zondacrypto production servers and executed 63 search or document-production orders. Poland has established a joint investigation team with Estonia and sought cooperation from authorities in Monaco, Italy and Switzerland. Questions about the exchange’s reserves intensified in April when customers reported withdrawal delays and Kral disclosed a cold wallet containing about 4,503 Bitcoin, then worth roughly $330 million. Kral said Zondacrypto could not access the wallet because management did not possess its private keys. He claimed the keys should have been transferred by Sylwester Suszek, the founder of BitBay, which was later rebranded as Zondacrypto. Suszek has been missing since 2022, and prosecutors later combined the Zondacrypto investigation with the long-running investigation into his disappearance. The visible Bitcoin balance did not establish whether all of the assets belonged to customers or whether the exchange had enough other assets to cover its liabilities. Investigators are now tracing blockchain wallets and transactions alongside conventional bank transfers.

Kral’s reported cooperation could also provide information about Zondacrypto’s sponsorships, advertising agreements and payments involving politically connected organizations. The exchange sponsored CPAC Poland near Rzeszow in May 2025, shortly before the second round of Poland’s presidential election, and spent heavily on advertising with conservative broadcaster Telewizja Republika. Zondacrypto was also connected with payments to organizations associated with conservative politicians. Those relationships do not establish criminal wrongdoing by recipients. Investigators would need evidence linking a payment to an illegal agreement, benefit or decision before sponsorship or advertising spending could support a corruption case. The same standard applies to information supplied by Kral. A cooperating suspect has a strong incentive to provide useful evidence in return for sentencing benefits, making corroboration through financial records, internal messages and other witnesses essential. If prosecutors eventually confirm the reported 2.4 billion-zloty loss, the case would move well beyond an exchange liquidity failure into one of Poland’s largest recent financial fraud investigations. For customers, however, the priority remains tracing assets. Establishing who was responsible will matter legally, but locating recoverable money will determine how much of the damage can actually be reversed.
