According to the 2026 Q3 Crypto Industry Report, total crypto market capitalization rose +39.6% (+$840.1 billion) to end 2026 Q3 at $3.0 trillion, up from $2.1 trillion at the end of Q2, though still -4.0% below where it began the year. The recovery was concentrated in August, when a US Treasury announcement that it would at least double its planned long-dated bond buybacks, alongside sustained net inflows into spot BTC ETFs, drove a +21.8% (+$489.8 billion) surge, accounting for more than half of the quarter’s gains.

Momentum proved resilient to the CLARITY Act’s failure in a key Senate procedural vote, with market cap reaching a quarterly high on September 21.While Ethereum (+71.0%) outperformed Bitcoin and all other majors on the back of $3.1 billion in spot ETH ETF net inflows, the quarter was defined by a rebound in prices that outpaced participation, with average daily trading volume falling -8.6% QoQ and spot CEX volume dropping -14.2% to $1.65 trillion.

Leverage returned faster than spot activity, as perpetual CEX open interest climbed +40.6% to close above $100 billion for the first time since 2025 Q3, while the recovery remained uneven, with Binance extending its dominance to a 42.7% spot share and KuCoin and Deribit seeing open interest decline. Elsewhere, Hyperliquid’s HYPE reached an all-time high of $98 following positive US regulatory news, and Robinhood Chain became the #3 most active chain within three months of launch, as memecoin trading overtook its tokenized-asset ambitions.

CoinGecko’s comprehensive 2026 Q3 Crypto Industry Report covers everything from the crypto market landscape to analyzing Bitcoin and Ethereum, deep diving into the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, and reviewing how centralized exchanges (CEX) and decentralized exchanges (DEX) have performed.

1. Total Crypto Market Cap Rose +39.6% in 2026 Q3, Ending September at $3.0T

The total crypto market cap rose +39.6% (+$840.1B) in 2026 Q3 to $3.0 trillion, ending three consecutive quarters of decline with its strongest quarterly gain since 2024 Q4.

The recovery was concentrated in August, when market cap rose +21.8% by $489.8 billion, accounting for more than half of the recovery in Q3. This rally accelerated after the US Treasury announced it would at least double its planned buybacks of long-dated government bonds. Alongside this were net inflows into spot BTC ETFs throughout August.

The CLARITY Act failing a key Senate procedural vote on September 15 did little to stall momentum, with total market cap reaching a quarterly high of $3.0 trillion on September 21, before closing the quarter at $2.96 trillion. Despite the strong rebound, total crypto market cap is still down -4.0% Year-to-Date.

Trading activity, however, did not keep pace with prices. Average daily volume fell -8.6% QoQ to $73.3 billion, a third consecutive quarterly decline, although activity built through the quarter, with September averaging $94.8 billion in average daily trading volume compared to $57.7 billion in July.

2. Ethereum (ETH) Climbed +71.0% to $2,684, Outperforming Bitcoin and Breaking Its Three-Quarter Losing Streak

The report states that Ethereum (ETH) climbed to $2,684, a +71.0% gain, outperforming Bitcoin and all other majors. The pump was led by a recovery in the broader crypto market, and strong US Spot ETH ETF net inflows of $3.1 billion, reversing all outflows from the first half of 2026.

However, despite the rebound in ETH price, average daily trading volume continued to fall, dropping -23.2% to $11.5 billion, from $15.0 billion in Q2.

Meanwhile, the anticipated Glamsterdam upgrade did not reach mainnet in 2026 Q3, after already being delayed in Q2. It is still being rolled out to testnets, with Sepolia activation on October 6.

3. Hyperliquid (HYPE) Climbed +40.5% in 4 Days, Hitting an All-time High of $98

Hyperliquid (HYPE) rose +40.5% after positive US regulatory news, continuing its strong momentum from 2026 Q2.

On August 19, 2026, US President Donald Trump announced that the CFTC’s chairman Michael Selig, is working to bring Hyperliquid to the US market, sparking a +40.5% four-day rally to $82, an all-time high (ATH) price at the time.

HYPE’s average daily trading volume rose +35.2% quarter-on-quarter to $0.85 billion in Q3, from $0.63 billion in Q2. The rally peaked on September 23, with HYPE hitting an ATH of $98.

Since its public launch on July 1, 2026, Robinhood Chain has captured massive attention from retail and institutional participants. It has generated over $88.9 billion in trading volume since its launch and averaged 9.5 million transactions per day in 2026 Q3, making it the #3 most active chain.

While the network was originally built as the next gateway for tokenized stocks and RWAs, it did not take long for memecoin traders to take over instead. Daily transaction volume on native DEXes grew from $1.3 million on July 1, to a peak of $3.5 billion on September 4, with the successes of the Cashcat memecoin and token launchpads such as Pons.

Although daily transactions spiked temporarily to 26.9 million due to the Spritehood NFT mint and the flurry of memecoin launches on August 12, the average daily transaction count has steadily hovered around ~9.5 million, as most newly deployed tokens failed to gain traction.

5. Spot Trading Volume on Centralized Exchanges Fell -14.2% in 2026 Q3 to $1.65T, with July Hitting a New Monthly Low of $0.4T

According to CoinGecko’s report, in 2026 Q3, the Top 10 spot centralized exchanges (Spot CEXes) recorded $1.65 trillion in trading volume, a -14.2% decrease from $1.93 trillion in Q2.

Volumes fell to a monthly low of $443.6 billion in July, before rebounding sharply in August to $712.3 billion.

Meanwhile, Binance continued to extend its dominance, with a 42.7% market share in Q3, up from 38.7% in Q2. It was the only exchange with a double-digit share, as others in the top 10 ceded market share.

In September, all the exchanges in top 10 chalked double-digit growth, with Upbit growing +83.9%, though throughout the quarter it had the biggest slump of -33.7%. Bitget fell out of the top 10, and is now #11. Prior to its hack in September, its trading volume was $15.7 billion and $18.7 billion, in July and August. For comparison, its volume in June was $37.8 billion.

6. Open Interest on Perpetual Centralized Exchanges Climbed +40.6%, Closing 2026 Q3 Above $100B, a First Since 2025 Q3

Open Interest (OI) on the top 10 Perpetual Centralized Exchanges (Perp CEXes) rebounded by +40.6% in 2026 Q3, on the back of the market recovery. OI closed above $100 billion at the end of Q3, the first time since 2025 Q3. While OI did spike just above $100 billion on Jan 14 and 15, the momentum faded quickly.

The last time OI remained above $100 billion was between May 10 – Nov 11, 2025, during the last leg of the bull market. Before that, it hit such levels during Nov 22, 2024 – Feb 4, 2025, during Donald Trump’s re-election and subsequent inauguration.

Among the top 10 Perp CEXes, Binance, Bybit, MEXC, Gate, Bitget, and Kraken all showed >40% QoQ growth. In absolute OI growth, Binance dominated, adding +$12.7 billion QoQ. However, KuCoin and Deribit both saw sizeable declines in OI, dropping -41.2% and -18.9% respectively, highlighting an uneven instead of broad-based recovery.
