Two of Abu Dhabi’s major sovereign wealth funds, Mubadala Investment Company and Abu Dhabi Investment Council, have maintained significant holdings in Bitcoin through BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, according to recent regulatory filings.

Mubadala and Abu Dhabi Investment Council Strengthen BTC Exposure

Mubadala disclosed a $490 million position in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust in its latest 13F filing, making Bitcoin the second-largest single asset in its portfolio. The Abu Dhabi Investment Council, in its own filing, revealed a $273.6 million stake in the same ETF, representing the council’s largest portfolio holding.

Combined, the two funds currently control $763.7 million in shares of BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF. Both positions remained constant compared to the previous quarter, reflecting ongoing institutional conviction in Bitcoin as a primary asset.

These investments illustrate how sovereign funds in the United Arab Emirates are choosing regulated financial products to access Bitcoin, rather than holding the cryptocurrency directly. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust provides institutional investors a way to gain exposure to Bitcoin’s price movements within traditional investment vehicles.

BlackRock’s IBIT has become the most successful crypto ETF, attracting more capital than any other comparable fund, with $47.3 billion in assets under management.

UAE Bitcoin Holdings: A Different Approach

Blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence previously attributed roughly 6,782 bitcoins to wallets linked to mining operations associated with the UAE’s Royal Group. At the time of analysis, these holdings were valued at around $453.6 million, further highlighting the nation’s ongoing accumulation of Bitcoin through local economic activity.

Unlike other governments such as the United States, which acquired substantial Bitcoin reserves primarily via law enforcement seizures, the UAE’s assets have mostly originated from domestic mining. This distinction underscores how the region’s approach to digital asset reserves contrasts with international counterparts.

Traditional Markets Shift Toward Web3

The arrival of spot Bitcoin ETFs has accelerated institutional engagement. Since January 2024, when the SEC approved the first regulated Bitcoin funds, institutional and state-level investors have increasingly chosen to allocate capital to these products alongside traditional equity holdings.

While monitoring institutional momentum is critical, a broader structural shift is also underway: Wall Street’s adoption of Web3 solutions. Some investors are now opting for platforms like 1stepSwap, storing shares of major U.S. companies, gold, and silver directly in crypto wallets. These platforms tokenize real-world assets and instantly locate the best market prices, eliminating traditional intermediaries.

The trend reflects a growing overlap between mainstream financial infrastructure and blockchain technology, as both state entities and private investors move to diversify portfolios through digital asset integration.

U.S. pension funds and state investment arms have also increased their exposure to Bitcoin by purchasing shares in the ETFs, broadening their traditional holdings in assets such as technology stocks and other U.S. equities.

Both UAE funds rely on regulated ETFs to access Bitcoin, while building direct reserves through domestic mining activities, contrasting the asset acquisition strategies seen in other countries.
