Blockstream CEO Adam Back (@adam3us) criticized the early design choices behind Ethereum (@ethereum, $ETH), as fresh warnings emerged about the risks that artificial intelligence and cryptography could pose to crypto wallets.
Adam Back Defends Bitcoin's UTXO Model
Back commended the UTXO design used by Bitcoin ($BTC), the transaction model that tracks unspent outputs rather than account balances. He added that Satoshi Nakamoto understood distributed systems better than the people behind Ethereum.
The comments add to a long-running debate in the crypto industry over the architectural trade-offs between Bitcoin and Ethereum. Back is one of the earliest figures in the field and is best known for Hashcash, a proof-of-work system Satoshi cited in the Bitcoin white paper. His remarks reflect a view held by many Bitcoin developers that simplicity and conservative design offer stronger security guarantees.
AI and Wallet Security Warnings
The criticism came as Ethereum researcher Justin Drake (@drakefjustin) warned that AI could threaten wallets in as little as a few months in a worst-case scenario. Drake did not suggest this was the most likely outcome, but he framed it as a risk the industry should take seriously.
Vitalik Buterin (@VitalikButerin) had earlier struck a cautious tone on the same topic. He stressed that the issue deserves attention but that there is no need to panic yet.
Taken together, the comments show two separate threads in the current crypto debate. One concerns the long-term design philosophy of the two largest blockchains. The other concerns how quickly advances in AI and cryptography could affect the security assumptions that protect user funds.
For now, the warnings are framed as potential risks rather than confirmed threats. Developers and researchers across both the Bitcoin and Ethereum communities are likely to keep discussing how wallets and protocols should prepare.
