Crypto analyst Dark Defender has claimed that XRP stands out as the only real asset among the collateral choices accepted by Ripple Prime, a financial platform by Ripple that caters to institutional clients. While Ripple Prime accepts a variety of assets as collateral, including U.S. Treasuries, gold, and a suite of stablecoins such as RLUSD, with RLEUR, RLJPY, and RLGBP planned for future support, Dark Defender argues that these options differ substantially in nature.
XRP stands apart from stablecoins
According to Dark Defender, every stablecoin listed by Ripple Prime represents a liability, as each one is a claim on underlying reserves held by a separate entity. In contrast, XRP is not tied to any issuer or dependent on reserves stored with a counterparty. He explained that this distinction makes XRP unique among the accepted forms of collateral.
Dark Defender further clarified, “XRP is the only Asset in that lineup.” He emphasized that stablecoins operate as the cash component of transactions, while XRP serves the collateral function, resulting in different risk exposures for entities involved in financial operations.
XRP is the only asset in that lineup, while the others are claims on reserves. Stablecoins represent cash, designed not to move, but to be held as a liability, whereas XRP stands alone as the asset leg.
The debate surrounding the potential for RLUSD to replace XRP in certain institutional contexts has grown more prominent. Despite discussions, Dark Defender reaffirmed that “Stablecoins are the cash, and XRP is the collateral leg. Not the same thing. Never were.” This structural difference is especially significant for institutions focused on counterparty risk mitigation.
The multi-asset design of the XRP Ledger
Vet, an XRP Ledger validator, highlighted the platform’s early adoption of a multi-asset architecture. He noted, “The XRP Ledger is the first ever multi-asset ledger the crypto world has seen, long before Ethereum.” His stance endorses the importance of stablecoins and other tokenized assets as integral to a functioning multi-asset ecosystem.
Bringing more assets onto the XRP Ledger enhances its potential utility. Limiting the range of assets would counter the foundational purpose of facilitating a diverse, multi-asset infrastructure.
Dark Defender supported this perspective but stressed that the sequence of asset adoption matters. Institutions, he said, would not begin to use tokenized assets or RLUSD as collateral on the XRP Ledger until there is a regulated, federally supervised custodian in place to ensure compliant asset custody.
He pointed out that achieving a bank charter would resolve regulatory and custody barriers. Ripple recently secured full approval for Ripple National Trust Bank. This development is expected to pave the way for institutional participation in the broader XRP Ledger ecosystem as custody requirements are met.
Mini dictionary: Ripple Prime is a service by Ripple designed to provide institutional clients with secure access to cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and traditional assets as collateral for various financial products. Stablecoins like RLUSD, RLEUR, RLJPY, and RLGBP are digital tokens pegged to fiat currencies and backed by underlying reserves.

Custody remains key for institutional entry
The discussion underscores that while the XRP Ledger already features multi-asset transaction capabilities, institutional adoption continues to hinge on regulatory-compliant custody solutions. With Ripple’s new bank approval, a pathway for increased on-chain activity using a broader range of assets—including stablecoins and tokenized assets—may soon open.
Adding new assets strengthens the XRP Ledger’s use cases, but only regulated custody can unlock institutional demand for such services.
