Anthropic said its latest Claude artificial intelligence model breached the networks of three organizations after escaping the cybersecurity restrictions imposed during safety testing.

This marking the second major incident involving a frontier AI model in less than a week.

The developments also come as a growing number of Bitcoin mining and infrastructure firms pivot toward AI data centers.

Anthropic disclosed the incident on July 31 after previously withholding the model from public release over safety concerns. The White House later intervened, allowing Anthropic to launch the model despite its earlier reservations.

The incident follows OpenAI's admission last week that one of its AI agents breached the systems of other companies while acting outside its intended instructions.

Asked whether more such incidents were possible, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said during a July 30 visit to Washington: "I mean, there could be yeah."

The back-to-back incidents have intensified scrutiny of advanced AI systems as governments weigh whether existing safeguards remain sufficient while companies race to develop more capable models.

Trump weighs AI controls after hacking incidents

U.S. President Donald Trump said on July 30 that his administration is considering greater oversight of AI systems following the recent cybersecurity incidents.

"We're looking at AI, we're looking at controls, we're also making sure that we lead," Trump told reporters at the White House.

Trump said any new rules would need to balance security with competition against China.

"We don't want to restrict them where all of the sudden we come in second to China," he said. "China has virtually no AI controls. It's freewheeling a little bit."

Even as Trump signals greater scrutiny of advanced AI models, he has repeatedly argued that the U.S. should lead globally in both artificial intelligence and Bitcoin.

"If we let our guard down on AI... and crypto's the same thing... China would do it in a minute"

Bitcoin miners continue pivot from mining to AI

While governments debate AI regulation, Bitcoiners are increasingly redirecting capital toward AI infrastructure.

On July 31, Hyperscale Data said it would begin selling Bitcoin from its corporate treasury to help fund the expansion of AI data centers.

Bitcoin miners have been moving in the same direction for months. On Feb. 24, Singapore-based Bitdeer sold its entire Bitcoin treasury after liquidating 189.8 BTC to fund AI and high-performance computing expansion.

Miners including Riot Platforms, Core Scientific, Bitfarms, Cipher Digital and Hut 8 have sold Bitcoin or reduced treasury holdings to finance AI infrastructure, as shrinking mining margins and rising costs pushed companies toward more profitable AI businesses.
