Ticino's State Bank Goes Live With Regulated Crypto

BancaStato, the cantonal bank serving Switzerland's Italian-speaking Ticino region, has joined @sygnumofficial's business-to-business banking platform to offer crypto asset services. The integration allows BancaStato customers to buy, sell, and hold four crypto assets, including $BTC, $ETH, $LTC, and $SOL, through the bank's existing web and mobile banking apps.

The move makes BancaStato the first bank on Avaloq's Software-as-a-Service environment to enable clients to buy, hold, and sell crypto via API with Sygnum directly from within its e-banking platforms.Trades are executed through Sygnum's B2B API without a separate order management system, which the firms said reduces operational complexity and supports flexible risk controls.Account holders can execute market orders by USD value or asset quantity within their standard digital banking interface.

Customer assets are stored using Sygnum's institutional-grade custody platform, which includes multiple security layers, governance controls, and independent audits. The assets are also held off BancaStato's balance sheet, providing added legal protection if the bank were ever to face insolvency.

Sygnum's B2B Network Expands, Eyes EU Market

With this launch, BancaStato becomes the latest institution to join Sygnum's B2B banking platform, which now serves more than 25 banks and financial institutions.Sygnum says its partner banks give more than one-third of Switzerland's population access to digital asset services.

The timing matters beyond Switzerland's borders. Sygnum holds a Swiss banking license and, since June 30, 2026, a Crypto-Asset Service Provider license under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, granted by Liechtenstein's Financial Market Authority. It gives Sygnum Europe passporting access into the EU single market, with the firm's Liechtenstein office positioned as a gateway to the bloc's largest economies. Most of Europe's 5,000-plus banks have yet to offer digital assets due to the cost, expertise, and resources required to build and maintain the necessary infrastructure, a gap @sygnumofficial is positioning itself to fill through its plug-and-play B2B model.

Fritz Jost, Chief B2B Officer at Sygnum, noted that "demand is growing for regulated, API-based digital asset services that can be integrated directly into existing core banking systems."
